CBMM Offers Coast Guard Programs This October

CBMM_1879HooperStraitLighthouseBoaters have an opportunity to build their skills with a special program offered by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD this October. Led by USCG-certified instructors, CBMM’s “Coast Guard Boating Safety & Skills Program” takes place on Wednesday evenings from 6-10pm, October 9 through October 23, with pre-registration required.

On October 9, “Suddenly in Command” is a four-hour boating safety primer designed for boating beginners or first mates in preparing for the basics in onboard, emergency situations. Participants will learn more about their vessels, including nautical terms and basic operating principles like how to start the engine. Also included are descriptions of what causes boating mishaps and how to minimize them, basic boat handling, and onboard safety equipment recommendations.

On October 16, “GPS for Mariners” offers participants an orientation on how to use a global positional system (GPS) device for practical, recreational boating. The program will cover basic operating functions and include more in-depth ways to gain more information from your GPS device. Course participants are invited to bring their own hand-held GPS units to the class, but GPS units are not required for registration. A textbook for the course will be provided.

On October 23, “How to Read a Nautical Chart” provides the navigator with the knowledge to interpret the chart’s contents to safely navigate to and from their destination, including reading latitude and longitude, depth of water, bottom type, magnetic variations affecting the compass, chart scales, and inter-tidal information. A textbook and training chart are included.

The course runs from 6-10pm on three consecutive Wednesdays on October 9, 16 and 23 in CBMM’s Van Lennep Auditorium. The cost per class is $35 for CBMM members or $40 for non-members. Participants interested in taking all three classes can enroll for $100 for CBMM members, or $115 for non-members. Space is limited, with pre-registration required by calling 410-745-4941.
