Behind seven shutout innings from starter Mike Wright, the Baysox (64-62) cruised to an 11-0 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (65-62) Sunday to take the series. It was the Baysox eighth shutout win of the season and the team’s second double-digit shutout of the Flying Squirrels this season.
“We swung the bats really well throughout the lineup,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “[Josh] Horton had a big night with a couple keys hits when we needed them and so did [Kyle] Hudson. Buck [Britton] had a big home run to get us on top. It was really nice to see.”
Wright picked up his league-leading 11th win of the season, pitching seven shutout innings and allowing no allowing a run on five hits while walking one and striking out nine.
“I have faced Richmond a lot so I felt like I had a pretty good approach going in,” said Mike Wright. “I had really good fastball command today. Me and [catcher Brian] Ward were really on the same page. When I wanted to throw a slider or change-up that’s what he called. It’s really easy to work off your fastball when you have it like it was today.”
Right fielder Buck Britton gave the Baysox the first inning lead with his second home run in as many at-bats after he ended last night’s game with a walk-off homer. With two outs and runners on the corners, Britton hit a blast over the right field fence against Richmond starter Chris Gloor to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead.
The Baysox added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Third baseman hit a lead off double to left field, moved to third base on a Niuman Romero sacrifice bunt and scored on a Josh Horton sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0.
Bowie opened up a big lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. First baseman Caleb Joseph hit a lead off double to left field and moved to third base on a Britton groundout. Waring followed with a walk and Romero plated Joseph with a single to left field. Horton followed with a single to load the bases and catcher Brian Ward brought one run home on a sacrifice fly. Left fielder Kyle Hudson plated the third run of the inning with a single to left field to give the Baysox a 7-0 lead. Richmond reliever Scott Shuman replaced Gloor on the mound to finish the inning.
The Baysox added four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Richmond reliever Ryan Bradley. Bowie loaded the bases with no outs and Garabez Rosa, pinch-hitting for Wilson Betemit, doubled in two runs before Joseph and Britton each hit RBI singles to give the Baysox an 11-0 lead. Richmond utility man Skyler Stromsmoe replaced Bradley on the mound to record the final two outs of the inning.
Reliever Tim Bascom pitched the final two innings for the Baysox to protect the shutout, allowing one hit while striking out two and walking two.
Gloor took the loss for Richmond, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking two.
The Baysox depart for a three game road series in Binghamton beginning Monday and return home Thursday, Aug. 22 for the final eight game home stand of the season.
