Wright Powers Past Erie For 10th Win

Baysox 2013IMG_9611The Baysox (61-59) used solid pitching and timely two-out hitting to overcome a 1:19 rain delay in a 4-1 win over the Erie SeaWolves (63-57) Tuesday evening. All four of the Baysox runs came with two outs and the Baysox pitching staff held Erie to 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Wright pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six and walking one in his 10th win of the season before his night was cut short by the rain in the top of the seventh inning. Left-handed reliever Chris Petrini earned his first save of the season, throwing three scoreless innings to finish the game and allowing one hit while striking out two and walking one.

“It all starts with good starting pitching and we got it tonight from Mike Wright,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “It’s a shame that the rain stopped him because I think he could have got us through seven the way he was going. They didn’t hit anything hard on him.”

Back for his first game with the Baysox since April 12, designated hitter Lew Ford helped the Baysox jump out to an early lead against Erie starter Warwick Saupold. Center fielder Trayvon Robinson drew a one-out walk and catcher Caleb Joseph moved him to second base with a single to center field. Ford followed with a double to left field that plated Robinson and gave the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with another two out rally. Ford hit a lead off double to left field and shortstop Niuman Romero followed with a walk. With two outs, second baseman Josh Horton singled to right field to plate Ford and move Romero to second base where he scored on a double to right field by left fielder Kyle Hudson to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead.

Erie got one run back in the top of the fifth inning against Wright. Brandon Douglas hit a one out single to right field and moved to third base of a James Robbins single to left field. Jamie Johnson brought Douglas home with a single to left field to make the score 3-1.

The Baysox added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Erie reliever Tyler Stohr. Third baseman Brandon Waring hit a one-out single to left field and moved to second base on a two-out Horton single to second base. Hudson brought Waring home with a single to left field that gave the Baysox a 4-1 lead.

Saupold took the loss for Erie, pitching four innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two and walking four.

RHP Devin Jones (4-4, 5.29) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the second game in a three game home series with the Erie SeaWolves. He will be opposed by RHP Kelvin Perez (1-1, 3.89).

The Baysox are home for a six game homestand through Sunday, August 18. Highlights include Military Appreciation Night Wednesday, Aug. 14 beginning at 7:05 p.m. and Halloween Night Thursday, Aug. 15 beginning at 7:05 p.m.
