Waring’s 3 Homers Boost Baysox

Baysox 2013IMG_9611Brandon Waring hit three of the five Baysox (69-68) home runs as Bowie cruised past the Binghamton Mets (84-54) 13-1 Thursday evening in the regular season home finale. With the win, the Baysox only chance to make the playoffs will be to sweep the five game series in Erie beginning Friday.

“I thought the tempo was set early with the way we swung the bats similar to the first night,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “It was nice to see Waring have a good night and Buck [Britton] also had a great night. I think everyone in the lineup had a hit and [Dariel] Alvarez had his first hit. It was nice to see him get the monkey off his back.”

Waring had the Baysox first three home run game since Nolan Reimold achieved that mark in the 2008 Eastern League playoffs. The trio of home runs gave the Baysox career home runs leader 77 in his five seasons in Bowie. Waring also tied a career-high and a season-high with six runs batted in.

“It feels good to have a good game,” said Waring. “I have been struggling a little bit lately – I haven’t had a multi-hit game in a while so this helped make up for it.”

Making a Major League Rehab Appearance, Orioles pitcher Jason Hammel pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing three hits and hitting two batters while striking out three.

The Baysox struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning against Binghamton starter Erik Goeddel. Designated hitter Travis Adair hit a lead off single to center field and Britton followed with a home run to right field. Catcher Caleb Joseph gave the Baysox back-to-back homers for the second time this series with a solo shot to left field for the third run of the inning. Seth Loman and Niuman Romero each singled and Waring followed with the third home run of the inning to give the Baysox a 6-0 lead.

Bowie added to the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Second baseman Josh Horton hit a lead off double to right field and moved to third base on a single to right field by Britton. Loman brought Horton home with a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-0.

Travis Taijeron got one run back for Binghamton in the top of the fifth with a solo home run against Daniel McCutchen to make the score 7-1.

The Baysox came roaring right back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Romero hit a lead off single to center field and Waring followed with his second home run of the night to center field. With one out, center fielder Garabez Rosa singled to center field and reliever Armando Rodriguez replaced Goeddel on the mound with two outs in the inning. Rodriguez surrendered a single to Horton and Britton plated both runners with a triple to center field before scoring on a wild pitch to give the Baysox a 12-1 lead.

Waring knocked in his third home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the Baysox lead to 13-1.

Following Hammel, McCutchen picked up the win for Bowie, pitching four and one-third innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out five and walking one. Reliever Clay Schrader pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game for the Baysox, allowing one hit while striking out three and walking two.

Goeddel took the loss for Binghamton, pitching four and two-thirds innings and allowing 10 runs on 12 hits while striking out five and walking one.

The Baysox depart for Erie Friday for the final five game series of the season. Friday’s game is a doubleheader with LHP Jake Pettit (6-6, 4.53) pitching for the Baysox in game 1 against RHP Drew VerHagen (2-4, 4.73. RHP Devin Jones (4-6, 5.73) takes the mound for the Baysox in game 2.
