Volunteer Center To Commemorate 911 Anniversary With Service

AA County 9-11 Memorial Dedication (57)EditThe Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County will commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks through service and volunteerism. As we approach the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, we have the opportunity to create a positive legacy through the powerful force of service.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, the Volunteer Center and its partners, including Maryland Dept. of Veterans Affairs, Ocean Conservancy, Anne Arundel Recreation & Parks, Friends of Anne Arundel Trails, the Midshipman Action Group and the Youth Volunteer Corps, will remember Sept. 11 with environmental projects starting at the Maryland W.W. II Memorial overlooking the Severn River and continuing to Jonas Green Park.

To commemorate Marylanders who have lost their lives in service to their country, including on 9/11, the day will begin at 8:30 am with a brief ceremony at the Maryland World War II Memorial located in the median at 1920 Ritchie Highway (Rt 450), Annapolis, MD 21409. The USNA Band Ceremonial Unit will provide music for the ceremony.

From 9:00 am until noon, volunteers will participate in environmental service projects beginning at the WW II Memorial and continuing to Jonas Green Park at the foot of the Naval Academy Bridge. This is a “rain or shine event” and will only be delayed or cancelled if there are local thunder storms.

In addition to weeding, planting and mulching to control stormwater runoff, we will participate in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) as volunteers record items of debris they find, giving us a clearer picture of the items impacting the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Volunteers will sign-in at 8am at the Maryland World War II Memorial. Opportunities for community service credits are available.  Students under the age of 18 must have written parental permission.  Those under 16 must not only have written parental permission, but an adult on site as well. Wear sturdy shoes or boots (no flip flops), bring a hat, gardening equipment (if you have tools), sunscreen, sunglasses and gloves.  Water will be provided.  Parking is strongly recommended at the WWII Memorial on RT 450.

Pre-registration is required.  For more information please go to www.VolunteerAnneArundel.org or contact Holli Dillard-Cranfill at [email protected] .
