Two Teens Critical After Fiery Overnight Crash

UPDATE 1151 am, August 11, 2013: The adult drive of Vehicle #2 (Mazda Protege) has been identified as Oscar Anibal Moreira, W/M, 18 years-of-age of Annapolis

UPDATE 820 am, August 11, 2013: From the Anne Arundel County Police Department:

On August 11, 2013 at approximately 0115 hours, officers from the Southern District responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision at Spa Road and Harness Creek Road, Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland 21403. Officers arrived on scene and found that two (2) vehicles had run off the roadway into the wood line and struck trees. Due the seriousness of the injuries Crash Investigators from the Traffic Safety Section were dispatched to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The initial investigation revealed that Vehicle #1 (Volkswagen Jetta) was traveling south on Spa Road at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Vehicle # 1 left the roadway entering the wood line just south of the intersection of Harness Creek Road and struck a tree. It appears that Vehicle # 2 (Mazda Protégé) was following Vehicle #1 and was also traveling at a high rate of speed. Vehicle #2 also failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway and entered the same wood line just to the left of Vehicle #1 and struck a different tree.

The driver of Vehicle #1 was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma and remains in critical condition. The passenger of Vehicle #1 was transported to University Of Maryland Shock Trauma and treated for minor injuries. Driver of Vehicle #2 was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center and was treated and released.

At this time excessive speed is a contributing factor in these crashes. A toxicology test was administered for the driver of Vehicle #1 and results are pending. The investigation is active and ongoing.

The driver of the Volkswagen is a 17 year old male from Annapolis who is listed in critical condition. His passenger was also a 17 year old male from Annapolis who was treated at Shock Trauma for minor injuries. The driver of the Mazda was identified as an 18 year old male from Annapolis. He was treated and released at Anne Arundel Medical Center.  

Two 17 year old teenage boys are in critical condition at Shock Trauma after being involved in a serious crash early this morning on Spa Road in Annapolis. In addition another teen was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Fire Department personnel were dispatched shortly after 1am for a serious accident involving 2 vehicles. Arriving crews found several people trapped and one car on fire in the woods near the intersection of Spa Road and Harness Creek Road.  This is just past the Spa Road entrance to the Hunt Meadow Community. Due to the prolonged extrication, the Shock Trauma’s GO TEAM was activated. The GO TEAM is a specialized shock-trauma team designed to be brought to the scene of an accident to begin treatment of patients on the scene. It is called into action where a prolonged rescue is expected. Ultimately the patient was extricated and the team was canceled prior to arriving on site.
