Carl Snowden And Caucus Of African American Leaders Rallies Behind Kirby

| August 15, 2013, 02:44 PM | 2 Comments

kirbyCarl O. Snowden, Convener of the Caucus of African American Leaders (CAAL)announced today that at its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at the Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center, earlier this month, the CAAL unanimously voted to oppose any efforts to have Alderman Kenneth A. Kirby removed from the ballot in next month’s Annapolis municipal elections.

The CAAL is a consortium of African American leaders and organization that membership ranges from the Black Chamber of Commerce of Anne Arundel County to the NAACP. The CAAL was organized earlier this year after the former health officer for Anne Arundel County was ousted.

Prominent African American leaders in attendance at the CAAL meeting included Alderwoman Classie Hoyle, Alderwoman Shelia Finlayson, Anne Arundel County NAACP President Jacqueline Boone Allsup, the Reverend Dr. Walter E. Middlebrooks, president of the Black Chamber of Commerce, Reverend Dr. Carletta D. Allen, pastor, Asbury United Methodist Church, Bishop Abraham Shanklin, HACA Commissioner Jeffrey C. Henderson, former alderwoman Cynthia A. Carter among others.

“The CAAL does not endorse candidates, we endorse a very simple principle, it is the voters who should decide whether a candidate should serve” said Mr. Snowden. He further stated, “Alderman Kirby has net the residency requirements and we are confident that the voters of Ward 6 will judge him on his record. The Court of Appeals earlier decided in  the case of Councilman Daryl Jones that a residency is determined by a  declaration of residency, Alderman Kirby has declared himself a resident of Ward 6 and the voters of that ward will have an opportunity to speak”.

The CAAL will be meeting on September 12, 2013 and will determine at that time whether there is a need to take any further action to ensure that democracy is allowed to flourish in the Capitol City. The meetings are open o the public. For more information call 410-269-1524.
