2 New Certified Environmental Stewards Named In Annapolis

estewardslogo_certifiedAs part of his Clean and Green City initiative, Mayor Joshua J. Cohen is proud to announce certification of two more Annapolis businesses for their sustainable practices.

The newest Environmental Stewards are Boatyard Bar & Grill, located at 400 Fourth Street, and Public Policy Partners, located at 48 Maryland Avenue.

“These two businesses are an excellent example of the diversity of this program,” Mayor Cohen said. “Each one of us needs to challenge ourselves, our family and friends to make environmental best practices part of our daily routine. It can be as simple as buying the right light bulb and recycling, and can include more committed decisions like planting a tree and using solar power.”

Boatyard Bar & Grill has had a long history of being environmentally conscious. Philanthropic owner Dick Franyo is a member of 1% for the Planet, and he frequently holds charitable events for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Coastal Conservation Association, and the National Wildlife Federation.  The Boatyard is also being showcased for purchasing local produce for menu items and installing an herb garden along an adjacent building on Fourth St. for educational purposes.

Public Policy Partners, a lobbying and public policy firm, is the first office to be certified as an Environmental Steward with this program. Though they do not own their building, they replaced all light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and purchased 100% wind-power as an alternative energy source.  In addition, Public Policy Partners send paper intended for recycling to be shredded and used on horse farms for bedding.

The Annapolis Environmental Stewardship Certification Program awards best practice certificates to homes, restaurants, lodging establishments, auto repair shops, schools, retail stores, places of worship, and office buildings.  For a full list, go to http://bit.ly/11slbfI.

In order to be eligible for the two-year certification, the applicant must earn enough qualifying points from a comprehensive checklist of environmental best practices and pass a verification inspection.

Restaurants that are interested in the Annapolis Environmental Stewardship Certification, but may need some guidance on sourcing menu items locally, can participate in the Green Plate Special program.  The Green Plate Special program incorporates the use of a logo that all restaurants in the city can use to highlight dishes that feature local ingredients.  In order to use the logo and participate in the program, more than 50% of a menu item’s main ingredients must be locally sourced within 300 miles, and the description of the dish must explain the source of the ingredients.  Using this logo will encourage residents to buy local dishes and give recognition to restaurants that make the extra effort to get locally sourced goods.

The Annapolis Environmental Stewardship Certification and the Green Plate Special Program are both part of the Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs’ Sustainable Annapolis initiative-a program to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and to protect and improve the environmental health of our neighborhoods and watersheds.
