The Event
The 12-Ounce Regatta is an annual fundraising event hosted by Chesapeake Outdoor Group (COG). Entrants build model sailboats from a collection of standard materials purchased from COG in advance of race day. The core ingredients are a six-pack of beer (root beer for the Kid’s Class), tape and a hanger. The completed boat must fit entirely in a 5-gallon bucket. The boats are raced throughout the day in a pond that COG purpose-builds for the regatta. Electric fans propel the boats down the racecourse. Prizes are awarded to the top competitors in each of the three racing classes and although it is nice to win, creativity in boat design is also rewarded. The regatta is a full-day event held at The Eastport Democratic Club, with live music and food and drinks available for purchase. Open the public, spectators are encouraged to cheer on the racers and participate in other activities throughout the day including a silent auction, “duck racing” and a gambling wheel.
Keeping in line with our motto of “Philanthropy and fun, all meshed into one”, proceeds from each year’s events are donated to local charities. To date, COG has donated more than $25,000.00 through funds raised during the 12-Ounce Regatta events. This year, proceeds will be donated to two deserving organizations: We Care and Friends and Annapolis Community Boating. We Care and Friends is dedicated to supporting the building blocks that create strong families and communities in areas hard-hit by drugs, poverty and crime. Annapolis Community Boating seeks to promote boating on the Chesapeake by providing affordable public access to a cooperative boating location and on-the-water educational programs.
