American Cancer Society
Outreach volunteers in AA County (and study participants) are being sought for a landmark, country-wide American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3); the study needs 30-65 year old participants who have never been diagnosed with cancer and are willing to make a long-term commitment to complete surveys every two years. We are seeking volunteers to help us promote CPS-3 to drive community participation during our open enrollment period September 15-21, 2013. A strong network of outreach volunteers is needed to help spread the word about CPS-3 and to encourage enrollment to their family, friends and internal networks. Volunteers can be in any category of health or walk of life: cancer-free, cancer Survivors, avid fundraiser, or someone just wanting to make a difference. Annapolis Film Festival Shorts Crawl, Sunday Sept. 22, 2013
The mission of the Annapolis Film Festival is to seek independent films, features, documentaries and shorts, that will inspire, enlighten and entertain all audiences on a variety of topics, promoting Annapolis as a cultural arts center. Guests will go from one venue to the next within walking distance in downtown Annapolis where they will enjoy drinks, light fare and viewings of a group of short films. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, sales, stage/venue management, group and schedule control, and audio-visual/technical support. There are two Shorts Crawl sessions; one running from noon to 4 pm with check in at 11 am and one from 5-9 pm with a 4 pm check in. Contact [email protected] for more information. Anne Arundel County Transportation Commission
County Executive Laura Newman is seeking volunteer county residents to serve on a newly formed committee to make recommendations on future county transportation policies and plans. Interested volunteers, age 18 and up and able to make a substantial time commitment over the next 4-6 months, should submit a letter and resume to George Cardwell at [email protected] by Aug. 1, 2013.
Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County
The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County is seeking nominations for its 13th Annual Philanthropy Celebration. Awards will be presented to the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County’s Philanthropist, Volunteer, Corporate Philanthropist and Foundation of the Year. The winners will receive their awards at the annual Celebration of Philanthropy in Anne Arundel County Luncheon which will take place this year on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel on Holiday Court in Annapolis. Healthy Markets, Benefit LLC
Healthy Markets, a Benefit LLC, will be operating a Farmer’s Market each Saturday from July–Oct. 2013 at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center (BWMC), 300 Hospital Dr., Glen Burnie, and needs volunteers to help vendors set up their tents and equipment at the beginning of the market, and break down their tents and equipment at the end of the market day. There also may be an opportunity for a volunteer manager to help manage the market as well. Seasonal fruits, vegetables, baked goods, recycled art, handmade jewelry, handmade soaps and other locally grown, made or produced products will be available. The markets will be held rain or shine. Home Depot – Hurricane Preparedness Workshops, July 27, 2013
According to the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season outlook, NOAA has forecasted an active storm season this year. From 10:00 am – 11:30 am on Saturday, July 27, 2013 The Home Depot is educating Annapolis and Anne Arundel County area residents about hurricane preparedness and storm safety at local stores. This is part of an unprecedented single-day effort in storm prone states from Texas to Maine with 700 free, in-store hurricane preparedness workshops. During the workshops, attendees will learn critical hurricane readiness topics, such as storm preparation projects, generator safety, sizing generators for specific home or business needs and assembling disaster preparedness kits. Volunteers are needed to help spread woodchips at beautiful Camp Woodlands in Annapolis starting at 10:00 am, July 19, 2013. Located along Broad Creek near Annapolis High School at 2744 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD 21401, this Girl Scout Camp is a true gem in our watershed. TEAM DNR
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking interested adults from particularly Montgomery, Frederick, St. Mary’s, and Baltimore counties to become TEAM (Teaching Environmental Awareness in Maryland) volunteers. Our volunteers’ mission is to educate students about the Chesapeake Bay, coastal and Bay marine creatures, and Maryland streams. Volunteers should have an out-going personality and a strong desire to help students understand and care for their natural environment. No prior teaching experience is necessary. Volunteers must have their own transportation. Since its inception in 1998, TEAM DNR volunteers have delivered 1,400 classroom programs to more than 33,000 students in Maryland. Watershed Stewards Academy (WSA)
WSA trains and supports community leaders called Master Watershed Stewards to help their communities reduce pollution and restore their waterways. Those interested in being certified as a Master Watershed Steward, should attend one of several informational orientation meetings this summer (August 5, 20, or Sept. 3, and 10, 2013) to learn more about the program. All informational sessions will be held at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center, 975 Indian Landing Rd, Millersville, MD 21108 at 6:30 pm. Applications are due by September 12, 2013.
