Local Teen Workcamp Helps Improve Anne Arundel Community. Kids at an Anne Arundel County camp are put to work for a good cause. It can be chaotic to have 300 teenagers together for a week of summer camp, but not one group. “It’s about Christianity, bringing the message of God to these kids,” said Janet Oren with Chesapeake Bay Workcamp. Workcamps is a national Christian youth group program — with a Chesapeake Bay chapter — that gathers teens from across the country to do home repairs for free, but it pays off in other ways.

Anne Arundel County Schools Get Acting Chief. The acting superintendent of Howard County schools will succeed Kevin Maxwell as acting superintendent in Anne Arundel County. The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County voted unanimously to appoint Mamie Perkins to take the helm of the state’s fifth-largest school system effective Aug. 1. Maxwell, who has led Anne Arundel County Public Schools since 2006, will become Chief Executive Officer of Prince George’s County Public Schools the same day.

New Fire Chief Appointed In Anne Arundel County. The interim leader of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department was appointed Tuesday to serve permanently as fire chief. Michael Cox Jr. will succeed Robert Ray as fire chief. Ray had served as chief for more than 30 years. Cox began his career as a firefighter at age 16 as a volunteer at the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department. For the past 25 years, he has worked within the Anne Arundel County Fire Department in nearly every bureau and division.

Boy, 11, Struck By Car In Odenton.  An 11-year-old boy was hurt in a pedestrian-involved accident in Odenton, police said. Anne Arundel County police officers were called to Odenton Road and Monterey Avenue for a pedestrian accident around 12:30 p.m. Monday. Police said an 11-year-old boy from Odenton was hit by a vehicle. investigators said the child was in a summer school program and had been safely dropped off by a school bus on Odenton Road. The bus pulled away and the child began to walk east along the sidewalk. After walking about 50 yards, the child suddenly attempted to cross the street and was struck by a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer also traveling east on Odenton Road
