Opera AACC To Perform At Artscape

operaOpera AACC will be performing at Artscape in Baltimore for the second consecutive year at

4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at the Theatre Project location, 45 W. Preston St., Baltimore.

Doug Byerly, department chair of performing arts at Anne Arundel Community College and the artistic director for Opera AACC, hopes to broaden opera’s appeal by using the Artscape performance to introduce opera to entire families.

This weekend’s show, “Opera AACC, Dancing from China to Spain” is an interactive trip that starts in China with an exciting dance/drama with audience participation, then on to Spain for a spirited excerpt from the famous opera, “Carmen,” presented with song and dance. Byerly said the production gets the audience involved in the show and is meant to be fun so that the next time these audience members hear about an opera performance, the whole family will feel comfortable attending.

Byerly says this region is opera-friendly because high-quality performers are drawn to companies in Baltimore and Washington and the area is close to colleges well-known for musical training for those who want to continue their studies. His program uses that talent to give AACC students access to professional performers.
