Two Children Critical After Crash With Howard County Cruiser On Route 100

traffic-accident iconOn June 8, 2013, at approximately 4:17 p.m., officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Eastern and Northern Districts responded to a report of a crash involving two vehicles at the merge of Route 100 East and Route 10 South in Glen Burnie.

Officers arrived on scene and discovered that a 2005 Honda Civic struck a 2013 marked Howard County Police Dodge Charger. Two children from the Honda were severely injured as a result of the crash and transported to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Trauma Center for treatment. The children’s parents were also taken to the same hospital in order to keep the family together. Due to the severity of the crash, officers from the Traffic Safety Section were requested and responded to the scene to investigate.

Preliminary investigation determined that the police vehicle was traveling on Route 100 East. The officer operating the vehicle was on duty at the time, not familiar with the area and was attempting to return to Howard County. The officer involved in the crash was identified as Symchay Kon Bendu, a four-year veteran of the Howard County police. The police vehicle approached the area where Route 100 merges with Route 10 south and attempted to make a u-turn onto Route 100 west. The officer slowed down at the end of the grass median and made an illegal u-turn directly into the path of the Honda, which was traveling in the fast lane of Route 10 south.

Initial information indicates that driver error was a contributing factor in this crash. It does not appear that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing at this time. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or with additional information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department at 410-222-8610 or the Traffic Safety Section at 410-222-8573.
