Anne Arundel County Veterans Commission

The Family Tree

The Family Tree’s mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect by providing family support and education that promote well-being among Maryland families.  Volunteers, over 18, are needed for child nurturers to create a safe, structured, weekly Children’s Program in North County.   Volunteers, over 21, are needed as parent educators in North and South Counties to co-teach a Positive Parenting Course in 12-week intervals.  Volunteers, over 21, are needed to run the “tot-line”, which is an emergency response (medical or otherwise) resource for parents with children under the age of 5; volunteers with experience/training in child development are preferred.  For further information about the “tot-line” and all volunteer opportunities, please visit the website given below. Friends of Back Creek Nature Park

This nonprofit organization assists the City of Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department with the preservation, Juvenile Service restoration, and enhancement of the park. Volunteers of all ages are welcome from supervised youngsters to adults, including Master Gardeners. There are a myriad of other opportunities for participating in and supporting the BCNP mission, including board and general members, volunteers, project leaders, donors, partners, sponsors, etc.  Projects can be carved out for volunteers who want to come by at their convenience and take responsibility for a particular sub-task or project. Historic Annapolis Foundation

Volunteers are needed in the areas of museum tours and education, horticulture in the William Paca House gardens, public programs and special events, membership services, and marketing.  On weekdays and weekends, William Paca House docents present tours of the home of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Historic Annapolis Museum greeters serve as ambassadors of history greeting and informing visitors about museum exhibits that present four centuries of history in the heart of Annapolis. Historic Annapolis Foundation also needs volunteers for its new living history site, The Hogshead at 43 Pinkney Street. Come and learn about another aspect of Colonial life as people ventured into the wilderness. Volunteers will be trained to interpret for visitors what life was like during time of the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Learn about the fur trade, leather crafts, colonial weapons, colonial games and much more, then share that knowledge with guests. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake

Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is a nonprofit which provides simple, decent, affordable houses for deserving families who currently live in substandard conditions in Anne Arundel County and the Baltimore area. Volunteers are needed to help with construction in the county and Baltimore area. Many departmental support volunteer opportunities are also available to prepare low-income families to become homeowners, plan construction work, promote and publicize work, fundraise, maintain relationships with volunteers and donors, manage our finances, and more. For Volunteers interested in learning additional construction skills, and are willing to commit to regular volunteer days, may want to consider

becoming a “Red Hat” (volunteers who serve as construction leaders on build sites). Habitat for Humanity will provide specialized training to equip them to supervise volunteer teams. The James E. Lewis Museum of Art

The James E. Lewis Museum of Art on the campus of Morgan State University in the Murphy Fine Arts Center is currently seeking Volunteers for Docent and Volunteer training opportunities. Specifically, help is needed at the front desk, with organizing and maintaining collections, digitization of records, administrative or educational tasks, and outreach volunteers. Maryland State Archives

Learn about Maryland history and the treasures preserved at the State Archives in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 years of age and older, are needed Monday through Saturday, between 8:30 – 10:00 am and/or 3:00 – 4:30 pm to assist in access and understanding of the records of the State of Maryland. Volunteers scan, index or keyboard many historic records, assist patrons with genealogy, research 19th century African-American records, and colonial records. Internships are also available. North County Emergency Outreach Network (NCEON)

NCEON in cooperation with area churches helps persons in their community in need of crisis assistance because of evictions, utility turn-off notices, emergency prescription needs, food pantry or other services. NCEON needs occasional volunteers to staff the office, stock shelves, bag food for the pantry and donate food and other items for the pantry. Operation Welcome Home (MD)

This nonprofit organization provides a hero’s welcome every week at BWI Airport International Terminal to military personnel returning home from the War on Terror. Volunteers are needed to attend welcome home events to greet by cheering, clapping, shaking hands to say thanks. Community organizations, schools, scout, and church groups are also invited to attend or hold a collection drive and/or donate water and snacks for the troops. Youth Golf Network

The Youth Golf Network is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, charitable organization founded in 2007 that promotes the game of golf to women and youth from many socioeconomic backgrounds. Through the game of golf, youth will become actively engaged in the social fabric of their community, and derive direct health benefits that improve their quality of life, and most importantly, have their lives enhanced by learning a different method of facing their demanding and challenging circumstances with enthusiasm and strength. We need volunteer professionals, people who can pull in teams of golfers, as well as volunteers.
