The USNA Class Of 2017 Takes Oath Of Office

1,206 people filed in the doors of Alumni Hall yesterday to begin their journey in the United States Navy as a Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy.  There were 932 men and 274 women representing all fifty states as well as 18 international students representing their home countries.  Almost 18,000 applied and only 1,200 were accepted.

At 6pm yesterday, in Tecumseh Court, in the shadows of Bancroft Hall and a flag flying at half mast in honor of Admiral Frank Kelso, a 1956 graduate who passed away earlier in the week, the Midshipmen took their oath of office. The Class of 2017 was addressed by Vice Admiral Michael H. Miller, Superintendent who warned the plebes of the rigors they face as well as the rewards. The Oath of Office was administered by the new Commandant of Midshipmen, Captain William D. Byrne, Jr.

After the brief ceremony, they had 45 minutes to reunite with family and friends before starting plebe summer. This was the last time parents would see their children for six weeks.
