Summertime At The Library

DIG into Reading LogoWe’ve got the dirt on summer reading at the Anne Arundel County Public Library! Kids entering grade 12 and younger are invited to stop by their local branch this summer and join the 2013 Summer Reading Club. This year’s theme is Dig into Reading! Sign up anytime, at any branch, beginning Monday, June 3. Club-related programs and activities start June 17 and run through July 27.

In addition to six weeks of special events for kids in preschool through the elementary grades and their families, there will be a special program just for teens that explores the role of the Native American Code Talkers in the US military – and an opportunity for middle and high school students to complete activities on the Anne Arundel County Public Library Teen Facebook page and be entered into drawings for gift cards!

The Summer program also includes special activities and prizes for adults.

For a schedule of events and locations as well as a description of all programs offered by the Library this summer, check out Library Happenings!, available in all library branches, or view the magazine online at www.aacpl.net. Look on page 14 for details on how you can win four-packs of tickets to see the Orioles play the Seattle Mariners on August 19.

Get up-to-the-minute information on events and other library news by “liking” them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/aacpl.

Summer Reading Night at the Baysox

Saturday, August 17

Members of the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Club ages 16 and younger are invited to march in an on-field parade and be recognized for their reading achievements during Summer Reading Night at the Baysox. The pre-game ceremony to honor the kids who are participating in Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program will be hosted by Sneaks, the Library Cat and Louie, the Baysox mascot.

Club members should gather at the carousel on the first base concourse beginning at 5:30 p.m. Festivities will begin at 5:45 p.m. and be followed by the game at 6:35 p.m. A fireworks extravaganza will follow the game. Club members are encouraged to wear their Summer Reading t-shirts. Parade participants will receive a special prize – as well as the cheers of their fans!

All Anne Arundel County Public Library Summer Reading Club members receive a free voucher for the game. Additional tickets for family and friends can be purchased at a discounted rate from the Baysox. Call the Group Sales Line at 301.464.4880. Tickets can also be bought online at www.baysox.com, using the special offer code SUMMER (All caps). Discounted ticket orders must be received by Friday, August 16.

A special note to parents:

Studies show that children who read over the summer maintain the reading skills developed during the school year. The Library’s Summer Reading Club is designed to encourage children to read more so they retain and even improve their academic skills. Here are a few simple ways to encourage your child’s success.

• Let your child see you reading.

• Re-reading stories can heighten a child’s literacy. Also, reading several books of different genres at once is a part of a child’s discovery process.

• When in doubt, ask a librarian for help finding age-appropriate literature for your child.

• Make reading enjoyable – the goal is to foster a love of reading!

• Talk about the books you’re reading and make sure to visit the library for a steady supply of new reading material – and attend our fun Summer programs
