Comptroller Peter Franchot awarded the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Anne Arundel County to Seeds 4 Success.  The award was created by Comptroller Franchot to acknowledge and honor former Governor, Comptroller and Baltimore City Mayor William Donald Schaefer’s legacy of public service. Seeds 4 Success founders and staff received this honor for their dedication to empowering children growing up in Annapolis public and subsidized housing. Participants of the Eastport Girls Club, a program of Seeds 4 Success (S4S) were also on hand for the ceremony.

Speaking at the Eastport Community Center on Tuesday, May 28th, Comptroller Franchot said: “I’m pleased to present this award for Anne Arundel County to Seeds 4 Success. This organization is making a positive impact in the lives of countless children and strengthening the community in the process. By offering Annapolis youth the tools and support to become healthy, successful adults, the tutors, mentors and staff are exemplifying the legacy of William Donald Schaefer to always help people.”

S4S Chairman and co-founder Helena Hunter was pleased to receive the award.  “We’ve come a long way in five years. We started as a social club and now we are a performance-based tutoring and mentoring program.  More than 50% of our girls made honor roll, many who were not reading at grade level when we first started working with them!”
