Southern High School Celebrates Special Olympians. Pairing traditional athletes with Special Olympic athletes is improving the lives of students who are taking part in Anne Arundel County’s Unified Sports Program, and one high school in particular has taken the lead. The Southern High School bocce Bulldogs brought home two gold medals in May, and they were treated with a hero’s welcome at school.

Lightning Strike Blamed For Ft. Meade Fire. A two-alarm fire destroyed two homes and damaged two others at Fort Meade, officials said. The fire, which started around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, was the result of a lightning strike to the roof of a home, officials said. Two homes at 5th Corps Avenue and Taylor Lane were destroyed and two others were damaged in the Potomac Place neighborhood.

Officials Investigate 2-Alarm Fire In Severn. Fire crews worked to battle a two-alarm fire at a home in Severn early Sunday morning. Anne Arundel County fire crews were called to the home in the 1800 block of Estate Court around 6:30 a.m. after getting multiple 911 calls. Officials said firefighters encountered heavy flames at the two-story single-family home.

Man Dies In Prison, Wife Not Notified.  A Baltimore woman who is grieving the loss of her husband said she is angry because he died in a hospital under state supervision, and she was never told about it. Terri Cooper-Bey sifted through some of her husband’s belongings this week that she picked up from the Metropolitan Transition Center, a pre-release state prison facility.
