Old Mill Steel Drums To Perform Free Concert At Maryland Hall Tomorrow

Steel-Drum03aEnjoy a free outdoor concert on the labyrinth featuring The Old Mill Steel Drum Band at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts on Wednesday, June 5 at 6 pm.  Part of the Sachs Memorial Summer Concert Series, the performance takes place on Maryland Hall’s front lawn, so bring your lawn chair, blanket, and a picnic basket and settle in for a relaxing evening of music on the labyrinth.

Walking through the hallways of Old Mill High School, you will recognize the sounds of the strings, band instruments, and singers practicing. One sound that you may not recognize is the sound of their Steel Drum Band.  The Old Mill Steel Drum Band is a group of 25-30 performers who play a unique style of music from Trinidad right here in Maryland. Starting with four students who gave up their lunch period to play the steel pans in 2000, the program has grown to around 80 students and is still growing.

The band is under the direction of Michael Miller who studied music at Towson University but is a self-taught pan player and arranger. The ensemble performs many musical styles, including calypso, reggae, jazz, classical, pop, and others. Over the past decade, the band has had the opportunity to work with several world known pan artists like Andy Narell, Ray Holman, Shawn Thwaites, and Victor Provost. Their original upbeat Caribbean style sends rhythmic vibes that gets your feet tapping, hands clapping, and head grooving with the beat.

The concert is free and no tickets are required.  In case of rain, the concert will be moved indoors.

The Sachs Memorial Concert Series is underwritten in part by Deborah Love in memory of her parents Joe and Jackie Sachs. Joe Sachs was one of the founders of Maryland Hall.
