Giant Food To Award Nearly $2M To Local Schools

Giant FoodsGiant Food of Landover, Md. is presenting nearly $2 million to local schools in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Delaware as a result of its 2012-2013 A+ School Rewards program. A+ School Rewards provides a simple way for schools to earn funds to support school programs and enrichment activities every time a customer makes a purchase using their Giant card in their neighborhood Giant Food. Throughout Maryland 1,270 schools will receive nearly $1.2 million.

“In its 25th year, our school rewards program continues to be a key component of our commitment to give back to our customers and their communities,” said Anthony Hucker, president, Giant Food of Landover, Md. “As the nation’s capital grocer, we believe in the importance of supporting educational and extracurricular programming that will help students and shape tomorrow’s leaders, especially in Maryland. We’re proud to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of Maryland students.”

The A+ School Rewards program is linked to shoppers’ Giant cards, earning points for all in-store purchases. Giant customers can designate up to two schools to benefit from their purchases. Since 1989, Giant’s school rewards program has raised more than $88 million to help both public and private schools in the Mid-Atlantic region fulfill their academic and enrichment needs. In the past, funds raised by A+ School Rewards have helped purchase new computers, additional classroom technology, musical instruments, and athletic uniforms and funded school aids, field trips, sports and after-school programs.

“The students and faculty of Mater Dei School would like to thank Giant Food and the A+ School Rewards program for their award this year. With the money we have raised through the tremendous efforts of our families, we will be purchasing all new computers for our library. This upgrade in technology allows our students to access information more efficiently and provides more effective means of teaching for our faculty,” said Billy McMurtrie, Mater Dei School headmaster. “This award will have an immediate and profound impact on our small independent school. Thank you to everyone who participated and especially to Giant Food!” Mater Dei School received $26,771.23, the program’s largest award.
