Baysox Split Double Header

BaysoxThe Baysox (28-30) needed a late rally to come-from-behind and beat the Rock Cats (30-32) 6-4 in Game 2 of the doubleheader Saturday night. The team blew a seven-run first inning lead in an 11-8 nine inning loss in Game 1.

The Baysox jumped out to early leads in both games, but struggled to hold on throughout the seven inning contests. In the first game the Baysox took a seven run lead only to see it evaporate by the fourth inning. In the second game, the Baysox took a three run lead, but needed a sixth inning rally to come from behind after surrendering the lead in the top half of the inning.

“We stranded some guys out there today in both games and finally we get a big hit from [Brian] Ward with two strikes to take the lead,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “It was much-needed. It’s frustrating after the first game when you score seven in the first and just can’t hold on to one.”

Making his Double-A debut for the Baysox in Game 2, Tyler Wilson was sharp on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on two hits while striking out six and walking two in the no decision.

“I have to pitch my game,” Wilson said. “The most important thing is to command my fastball and use all three of my pitches down in the zone. I tip my hat to the guy who put a good swing on a bad pitch, but that is part of the game. You learn from it and respond and bounce back. I just need to get ahead, throw strikes and give my team a chance to play behind me.”

Outfielder Steven Bumbry was a force for the Baysox on offense, hitting a home run in each of the two games and driving in five total runs during the day.

“I am starting to feel comfortable,” Bumbry said. “The game is starting to slow down and I am seeing the pitches well. I am getting good pitches to hit and putting good swings on them. It’s all coming together.”

The Baysox jumped out to the fast start in the bottom of the first inning, sending 10 players to the plate and scoring seven runs.  Ty Kelly led off with a walk, Niuman Romero singled and then Henry Urrutia hit a two-run double to knock both of them in.  After a walk and a wild pitch, Luis Martinez brought home Urrutia with a sacrifice fly.  Aaron Baker followed with a single to put runners at first and second base.  Then Garabez Rosa hit the second two-run double of the inning to bring home Waring and Baker.  Steven Bumbry then capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run home run that made the score 7-0.

In the top of the second inning the Rock Cats started their rally.  They loaded up the bases with one out on a walk, hit batter and an error.  Kyle Knudson then got them on the board with a bloop two-run single to right field.  Danny Santana added another run with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-3.

The Rock Cats added two more runs in the third inning.  Reynaldo Rodriguez drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI double by Nate Hanson.  Then with runners at the corners, Jordan Parraz reached on an error that scored Hanson and made the score 7-5.

Josmil Pinto tied up the game in the fourth inning with a two-run home run, his 11th of the game that made the score 7-7.

In the seventh, the Rock Cats took their first lead of the game.  Rodriguez drew a lead off walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hanson.  Then with two outs, Jordan Parraz knocked him in with an RBI single to center to give the Rock Cats an 8-7 lead.

The Baysox would immediately answer back in the bottom of the seventh when Brandon Waring led off with his ninth home run of the season to tie up the score 8-8.

The Rock Cats put the game away in the ninth inning by scoring three runs.  Pinto drew a lead off walk, Rodriguez singled and Hanson bunted them both over.  After an intentional walk with two outs, Chris Pettit was hit by the very first pitch of his at bat to force in Pinto and give the Rock Cats the lead.  The next batter, Knudson, hit his second two-run single of the game to make the score 11-8.

Reliever Jason Gurka took the loss for Bowie, pitching two innings and allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two batters. Baysox starter Mike Wright pitched three and one-third innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits while striking out three and walking two.

Reliever Matt Hauser picked up the win for New Britain, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing one hit while striking out one batter.

Steven Bumbry got the Baysox out to the early lead in the second game when he hit a three-run home run in the second inning to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth inning the Rock Cats got on the board with a two-run home run by Danny Ortiz to make the score 3-2.

The Rock Cats again came back to take the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled to right field and made it all the way to third after a throwing error by Bumbry. Danny Ortiz then singled to score Rodriguez before the bases were loaded by another single and hit batter. Ortiz scored on a sacrifice fly to give New Britain the 4-3 lead.

The Baysox battled back to retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Garabez Rosa reached on a throwing error and George Barber followed with a single to right field. Both runners advanced on a Bumbry groundout and scored on a two out single to left field by Brian Ward. Ward then came around to score on a single from Ty Kelly to give the Baysox a 6-4 lead.

Making his first appearance with the Baysox, reliever Marcel Prado earned the win for the Baysox, pitching one inning and allowing two runs on three hits. Closer Zech Zinicola earned his 11th save of the season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

New Britain starter Logan Darnell took the loss for the Rock Cats, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out five and walking one.

LHP Jake Pettit (3-2, 3.95) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team completes a three game home series against the New Britain Rock Cats. He will be opposed by RHP D.J. Baxendale (0-1, 13.50).

The Baysox are home tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. and depart for a six game road trip with stops in Reading and Binghamton Tuesday before returning home for a six game series Tuesday, June 18.
