Two Anne Arundel Community College students were among the winners of the 2012-2013 National Student Art Competition sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College, an international organization described on its website as “committed to improving community colleges through innovation, experimentation and institutional transformation.”
Marie Machin of Severna Park won second place for the piece, “Life After Death” and James Haupt of Odenton won one of three Juror’s Choice awards for “In Your Honor.”
The first place award was presented to Sarah Marie Land, St. Louis Community College, for her piece titled, “Elliot.” Third place award went to Michal Niv, Foothill-De Anza Community College District—Foothill College, for, “Something Must Come to an End, Something Must Begin.” Other Juror’s Choice awards were given to: Seth Ferreira, Kirkwood Community College, for “White Noise;” Sarah Gill, St. Louis Community College, for “Kingdom Falls;” and
Under the leadership of Maricopa Community Colleges, the competition included 95 works of art submitted by students at the League’s 19 board colleges. Maricopa Community Colleges is creating a catalog of all entries that will be mailed to League board members this fall.
The jurors for this year’s Student Art Competition were:
- Mina Cheon is a Korean American new media artist, scholar, and educator who divides her time between Seoul, Korea, Baltimore, and New York. Cheon received her PhD in Philosophy of Media and Communications from the European Graduate School, European University for Interdisciplinary Studies, Switzerland, and published her book Shamanism + Cyberspace (Atropos Press, NY and Dresden) in 2009. As an artist, Cheon has exhibited internationally what she calls her “Polipop” (Political Pop Art). Cheon’s art addresses the relationship between media and political conflicts within Asia and Asia’s relationship with the Western world.
- Linda Bayley Hoover earned her BFA from the University of North Carolina, Asheville and her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has taught studio art and art theory courses for colleges and universities in the Baltimore area since 2006. Hoover’s work has been featured in exhibitions in the Baltimore area and beyond, and was recently profiled in “New American Paintings” and the “Little Patuxent Review. “
- Trace Miller is a painter and Visiting Assistant Professor at Towson University in Towson Maryland. Miller received a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. His works have been exhibited extensively in the Mid Atlantic region as well as New York and Chicago.
