Thunder Slam Baysox

BaysoxThe Trenton Thunder (26-24) used two grand slams on Sunday afternoon to score all of their runs and beat the Bowie Baysox (23-24) 8-5.

Both starting pitchers threw five shutout innings to begin the game.  Mike Wright struck out seven through those first five innings while allowing just two hits.  On the other side Matt Tracy also threw five shutout innings for the Thunder with seven strikeouts.

The Thunder would get the scoring start in the sixth with their first grand slam of the game.  Ramon Flores and Slade Heathcott reached on back-to-back errors to begin the game.  Tyler Austin then followed with a walk to load up the bases.  Then on the very first pitch that J.R. Murphy saw he hit a grand slam just over the left field wall to make it a 4-0 game.

In the seventh inning, the Baysox would cut the lead in half.  Luis Martinez and Josh Horton drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning and Cale Iorg bunted them both into scoring position.  Then with Ty Kelly at the plate, Danny Burawa threw a wild pitch that allowed Martinez to score.  Kelly followed with an RBI double that made it a 4-2 game.

The Baysox would keep the rally going in the eighth inning when Caleb Joseph and Henry Urrutia started things off with two straight singles to put runners at the corners.  With one out Martinez hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Joseph and made it a one-run game.  After Josh Horton was hit by a pitch, Cale Iorg lined a 3-2 pitch into the left-center alley to bring in two runs and give the Baysox their first lead of the game at 5-4.

The lead would end up being short lived.  Zech Zinicola came on for the ninth and walked the first two batters of the inning.  After a sacrifice bunt, Zinicola then intentionally walked Kevin Mahoney to load up the bases.  Ali Castillo then hit a high chopper to Brandon Waring at first, who jumped up to field it then threw home to get an out at the plate for the second out of the ninth.  Ramon Flores then followed with the second grand slam of the game for the Thunder, his first home run of the season and it gave them an 8-5 lead.

Brandon Pinder who gave up the three runs in the ninth got the win.

Jeremy Bleich threw a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.

The loss went to Zech Zinicola who gave up the four runs in the ninth inning on just one hit and walked three.
