SeaWolves Strike Baysox Early

BaysoxThe Baysox (14-20) fell behind early, trailing by as many as eight runs in the fifth inning, on the way to a 10-6 loss to the Erie SeaWolves (22-13) Sunday afternoon.

“Through nine innings that wasn’t a bad performance, we just need to keep them off the board,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “We didn’t command the ball very well, we gave up a lot of runs and we fell behind early. It’s hard to come back at that point.”

Throwing the knuckleball for the first time, Baysox starter Zach Clark threw three and one-third innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits while striking out three and walking six in the loss.

Erie scored first in the top of the first inning against Clark. Eugenio Suarez hit a one out single to center field and moved to second base on a walk by Daniel Fields. Both runners advanced on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Clark and Suarez scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Collins to give the SeaWolves a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Kyle Lobstein. Left fielder Xavier Avery hit a lead off single to center field and stole second base before scoring on a single to left field by Caleb Joseph.

The SeaWolves came right back to take the lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Clark walked two batters and hit a batter to load the bases before issuing another walk to Jamie Johnson to bring in a run. With two outs, Fields doubled down the right field line to bring in two more runs and Collins followed with an RBI single to right field to give Erie a 5-1 lead.

Erie extended the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Suarez drew a one-out walk and moved to third base after a double to right field by Fields. Reliever Matt Bischoff then replaced Clark on the mound and Suarez scored on a ground out by Tyler Collins to make the score 6-1.

The SeaWolves blew the game open with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. James Robbins hit a lead off double to left field and scored when Luis Castillo singled to center field. Marcus Lemon followed with a triple to center field that plated Castillo and he came around to score on a groundout by Zach Maggard that gave Erie a 9-1 lead.

The Baysox got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Center fielder Kyle Hudson hit a lead off single to shortstop and catcher Brian Ward followed with a single to center field. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Hudson came home on a groundout by Avery. Second baseman Buck Britton followed with a double to right field that brought Ward home and made the score 9-3.

Bowie got two more runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning against Erie reliever Michael Morrison. Right fielder Henry Urrutia hit a lead off infield single and moved to third base on a Niuman Romero double to center field. Urrutia scored on a wild pitch and Ward plated Romero with a single to left field to make the score 9-5.

Erie got one run back in the top of the ninth inning against Baysox reliever Zech Zinicola. Lemon drew a lead off walk and moved to second base on a single to center field by Johnson. Suarez singled to right field to load the bases with one out and Fields brought Lemon home with a sacrifice fly that gave Erie a 10-5 lead.

The Baysox cut into the lead in the bottom of the ninth inning against Erie reliever Justin Souza. Ward drew a lead off walk and moved to second base on a double to right field by Avery. Ward scored on a groundout by third baseman Garabez Rosa to make the score 10-6.

Bischoff pitched two and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one and walking one. Reliever Eric Beaulac pitched one and one-third scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out two. Zinicola pitched one and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out one.

Lobstein earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking two.

The Baysox are home through Thursday, May 16 for an eight day, seven game home stand. Enjoy Tightwad Tuesday, May 14 in a game starting at 7:05 p.m. and Mustache Madness Thursday, May 16 in a game starting at 7:05 p.m.
