Sailing Director, Joel Labuzetta, and Junior Program Coordinator, Alana O’Reilly, traveled to Chicago on May 10-12 with the Annapolis High School sailing team who placed sixth nationally in the Interscholastic Sailing Association’s High School Doublehanded Championship for the Mallory Trophy.
The Championship brings together the top high school teams from around the country who have qualified from their own districts. Out of almost 400 high school sailing teams in the US, the field was narrowed to just 20 through a series of local and regional qualifying events. The Mallory Trophy is the oldest trophy in school sailing now rotated among the ISSA Districts as a perpetual trophy.
Annapolis High School is one of the four high school sailing teams who train at Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC) in the fall and spring. A total of ten Junior Sailors hailing from AYC’s summer sailing program also participated in the Championship representing Annapolis High School, Severn School, and Broadneck High School.
Upon arrival in Chicago on Friday, practice was cancelled as the sailors were met with unseasonably cold temperatures and a big onshore breeze with waves breaking over the seawall at the Chicago Yacht Club. Over the next two days, 12 races were sailed in both A and B division in varied conditions. The wind clocked through almost 360 degrees and varied from less than 5kts all the way up to 28kt gusts during some races.
Results
Patrick Floyd and Evan Morgan placed 2nd in A division for Seven School. Severn placed fifth overall in the Championship. Floyd, a graduating senior, will join the AYC Junior Fleet coaching staff this summer as a beginner Opti Coach.
Harrison Hawk, Lilli Salvesen, and Cailin Oakes placed 3rd in B division for Annapolis High School.
Other AYC members sailing were Charlie Lomax and Austin Ortel for Annapolis High School; Nick Floyd, Maeve White and Ian Morgan for Severn School; and Matt Schofield for Broadneck High School.
