Four people are on their way to burn centers after an explosion occurred on their boat at the Oak Grove Marina on Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Fire and EMS crews were dispatched right around noon this afternoon.
Initial reports indicate that there was no fire, which indicates it may have been a flash explosion due to a build up of gasoline vapors in the bilge.
Two 9-year old children were flown via MSP helicopter with third degree burns and the two adults were taken by ground ambulance to regional burn centers.
Details are still coming in and we will have photos and more information shortly.

I was there, saw the explosion and saw kids and adults jumping off the boat and waving in the water screaming. It was at least 5 minutes before anyone made any attempt to help. Finally, a couple of marina staff casually walked to the pier with some equipment. Not one boat was launched to assist. It was disgraceful to see those people waving and screaming and everybody just looking! Marina gas pump staff should be trained to respond to such emergencies. We had to wait for the boat to refuel because the pump was broken. At the pier, the kids were singing and dancing and after they pulled away the next time I saw them they were begging and screaming.
