Storm water fees that residents will have to pay go into effect in July in many parts of Maryland, but the top official in one local jurisdiction shot down the county’s first attempt at implementing the controversial fee. Newly appointed Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman said Thursday that she vetoed the so-called rain tax.
2 Hurt In Glen Burnie Townhouse Fire. A 60-year-old man and a firefighter were hurt during a fire at a townhome in Glen Burnie on Thursday. Firefighters were called to a home in the 6400 block of Lamplighter Ridge shortly after 9:15 p.m., where crews saw smoke coming out of the two-story home. Firefighters said they found a man who suffered first-degree burns and smoke inhalation. He was taken to Baltimore-Washington Medical Center, where his condition isn’t known.
Crews Battle 3-Alarm Annapolis Apartment Blaze. Firefighters in Annapolis are working to put out a three-alarm blaze that broke out late Thursday morning at a five-story apartment building. Crews were called to the 700 block of Americana Drive around 10:30 a.m. to find smoke coming out of the fifth floor of the complex and flames shooting through the roof.
Arundel Police Chief Accused Of Gay Slurs, Retaliation. Anne Arundel County’s relatively new police chief is under investigation amid allegations that he used homophobic slurs and retaliated against officers who testified in the case of former County Executive John Leopold. Current County Executive Laura Neuman confirmed to 11 News that her office has launched an investigation after County Councilman James Benoit alerted her to the allegations. However, police Chief Larry Tolliver and one of his corporals are fighting back.
