In celebration of Independence Day, the waterfront Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels has booked The Olney Big Band for its July 6 Big Band Night. This will be the band’s first performance at the museum, which has hosted Big Band Night for more than 25 years.

On Saturday, July 6 from 7-10pm, the public is invited to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets for an evening of music and fireworks along the Miles River. Two vocalists will join the 17-member Olney Big Band—directed by longtime professional musician and conductor Dr. Robert Tennyson—to perform from the historic Tolchester Beach Bandstand. The rain date is Sunday, July 7.

Performing all the big band era greats though present day, The Olney Big Band has entertained audiences from as close as Blues Alley in Washington D.C. to as far away as the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland with their special brand of swing, jazz, and dance music. Selected as Ambassadors of Big Band Music by the Sally Bennett Big Band Hall of Fame in Florida, the band has a sample of their music and more at www.olneybigband.org.

Admission is collected at the event at $5 for CBMM members and $10 for non-members, with children under 12 free. After 8:45pm, admission will be reduced to $2 for those watching the fireworks only. Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, and guests can bring food and drinks as well. Event proceeds benefit the children and adults served by CBMM’s educational, exhibit, and boat restoration programs.

With the St. Michaels fireworks scheduled to launch after dusk that evening, the museum’s Navy Point location offers a great waterfront venue from which visitors can enjoy the fireworks. For more information, call 410-745-2916 or visit www.cbmm.org/bigband.
