Innovative Program Making A Difference In Employment

AAWDCSo far, more than 800 residents throughout the county have participated in a series of FREE workshops and events designed to help them get back to work, with more expected to take advantage of the program. Continuing through May 3, Back-to-Work Month, sponsored by the Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation, has included innovative programs for all levels of job seekers, including new graduates, 50+ workers, entry-level, mid-career, seasoned professionals and veterans.

“With more than 12,000 job openings in Anne Arundel County,” said AAWDC President and CEO Kirkland Murray, “we are committed to helping create win-win opportunities to match businesses in the area with qualified candidates seeking employment; and thereby, doing our part to contribute to the economic growth of the county.”

Murray adds, “We’re here to help Anne Arundel residents seeking employment opportunities get the competitive edge in a changing job marketplace.”

Participants signed up for programs covering areas such as resume renovation, interviewing success, security clearance / federal jobs, 50+ rebranding and career assessment. Special events have also provided job seekers with the chance to network directly with hiring businesses representing in-demand, high growth industries, including Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Green Jobs / Construction, Hospitality, Energy and Health Care. They listened at a standing-room-only event as renowned economist Anirban Basu provided a hopeful economic and job growth outlook for the area.

“The best part for me was hearing that there is some reason to be positive about the job market,” said attendee Doug Stephany.

“I’ve used AAWDC before; never been part of Back-to-Work Month and this is fantastic!”  said Paula Pearson, another job seeker participating in the program.

Back-to-Work Month programming lasts the entire month of April through May 3. “Speed Recruiting,” an innovative matching program similar to speed dating is slated for April 24, providing opportunities for prescreened applicants to meet one-on-one with employers from technology and government who are seeking skilled workers.

Veterans are participating in a multi-part resume and application clinic that culminates in a recruitment event on May 1.
