TeresaScanlonTeresa Scanlon has been named “Ms. Maryland America 2013”. In its announcement, the Ms. America® Pageant stated that the mission of the pageant is to celebrate the accomplishments of women; to encourage women to be engaged within community service projects; to use [her] “Crown for a Purpose” and to make an overall difference.

Scanlon, of Edgewater, won the state crown after judges measured beauty, poise and her personal and intriguing story after being diagnosed with a pituitary brain tumor in 2010. Scanlon stated she “ is looking forward to carrying on her mission of educating people on the need to become their own Healthcare Advocate.” Scanlon encourages everyone to visit her website, to learn more about her journey and community involvement.

“Teresa made an incredible impression on our judges and we are thrilled to have her represent Maryland” expressed Susan Jeske, Ms. America® Pageant CEO. The 2013 Ms. America® Pageant will be held June 20-23 in Costa Mesa, California. Prior to departing for the national competition, Scanlon will undergo one more neurosurgery, a highly specialized procedure to eliminate a chronic facial pain known as Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia. This facial pain is something that she has endured since her original surgery. Scanlon will be documenting and sharing her upcoming treatment and recovery through her blog on her website and via her Facebook page (link below).

“I hope that by sharing my medical challenges and experiences, I can help others with brain tumors or facial nerve pain learn how to treat and eliminate chronic illness.” Scanlon explained, further stating “while I may not be 100% for a short period of time, I recognize this opportunity to raise awareness for Healthcare Advocacy and to serve as the official goodwill ambassador for Guard A Heart (a heart-health awareness foundation) on a national stage”.
