Baysox Stumble Against Senators

BaysoxDespite carrying a one-run lead into the eighth inning, the Baysox failed to hold off a late surge from the Harrisburg Senators as they fell 4-3 Thursday on Opening Night.

The Baysox used a pair of home runs from first baseman Aaron Baker and right fielder Lew Ford to bring a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning, but the Senators answered with two late runs to retake the lead and win the game.

Harrisburg struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Baysox starter Mike Wright. Steven Souza hit a one out single to right field and then quickly stole second base to move into scoring position. Justin Bloxom followed with a single to center field that plated Souza to give the Senators a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when Baker hit a solo home run to right field off Harrisburg starter Brian Broderick to tie the game 1-1.

The Senators retook the lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Souza singled and reached third after fielding error by center fielder Xavier Avery. Souza came around to score for the second time after a single to right field by Sandy Leon to give Harrisburg a 2-1 lead.

Bowie struck again in the top of the fifth inning. Second baseman Ty Kelly hit a two out double to left field and Ford followed with a home run to right field that gave the Baysox their first lead at 3-2.

The Senators retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning against left-handed reliever Chris Petrini. Petrini surrendered a lead off single to Josh Johnson and walked the next two batters to load the bases before being replaced on the mound by Zech Zinicola. Destin Hood followed with a single to right field that plated two runs to give Harrisburg the 4-3 lead.

Wright pitched four innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two batters and walking one. Reliever Sean Gleason pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of Wright, allowing just one hit while striking out two batters.

Petrini was tagged with the loss, pitching one-third of an inning and allowing two runs on one hit and a pair of walked batters. Zinicola finished off the game for the Baysox, pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing one hit while striking out one batter.

Rob Wort earned the win for Harrisburg, pitching a perfect eighth inning where he struck out one batter. Pat Lehman earned his first save of the season after pitching a perfect ninth inning.

LHP Jake Pettit takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the second in a four game road series with the Harrisburg Senators beginning at 7:05 p.m. He will be opposed by RHP Blake Treinen.

The Baysox home opener is Thursday, April 11. The team starts off the home schedule with a seven game homestand that features a magnet schedule giveaway Thursday, April 11 during a game starting at 7:05 and Pi(e) Night Friday, April 12 in the game starting at 7:05 p.m.
