Standing In The Shadows Of Motown
Monday, March 11, 2013 | 6pm, 9pm | $65
Motown and Funk Brothers fans, take heed:
The March 11 show Standing in the Shadows of Motown, Live! featuring Leela James, Peabo Bryson and James Jamerson, Jr. is truly not to be missed and will be one of the best shows ever to grace the stage at Rams Head On Stage!
A bit of history:
Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a 2002 documentary film directed by Paul Justman, based on Alan Slutsky’s book of the same name. It recounts the story of The Funk Brothers, the un-credited and largely unheralded studio musicians who were the hand picked house band by Berry Gordy in 1959, and who recorded and performed on Motown Record’s recordings from 1959 to 1972.
One of the wonderful aspects of this inspirational documentary is the amount of raw talent, not only that of the Funk Brothers themselves, but of all of the artists who participated and/or performed in the documentary; Bootsy Collins, Chaka Kahn, Ben Harper, Joan Osborne, Montell Jordan, James Jamerson and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This amazing piece went on to win numerous awards including a New York Film Critics’ Circle award, and two Grammys in 2003. If you haven’t yet seen it Netflix it!
In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the release, Standing in the Shadows of Motown is now a LIVE SHOW, starring soul crooner Peabo Bryson and Stax Records’ Leela James. AND, unbelievably, James Jamerson, Jr. is part of this amazing lineup playing the fender bass in the same style that his father made famous.
So expect to witness two dozen Motown hits performed by an 11 piece all-star band that’ll make you feel like you’re back in the Hitsville U.S.A. studio when these songs were originally recorded.
Don’t miss this once in a lifetime musical experience at Rams Head On Stage on March 11th.
