Coming Up At Rams Head On Stage
What good shows are coming up at Rams Head On Stage? That is an impossible question to answer. My likes are not your likes. But the truth is that with 30+ shows a month, there is something for fans of just about every genre. There are the big names that everyone has heard of such as Dr. John and The Oak Ridge Boys, and then there are the lesser known, somewhat “niche” artists that come through (check out Rasputina and Hiroshima). And there are always some “hidden gems” that appear as opening acts. These are particularly fun because you can potentially find “the next big thing” (I found it fascinating that Milow was the opening act for Kat Edmonson a bit ago and that he is HUGE in his home of Belgium. We’re talking Big Star). For example, it wasn’t so long ago that we had both John Mayer and Jason Mraz here as opening acts!
Rather than ramble on, here are three cool shows you need to put on your radar!
Psycho Killers
Saturday, Mar 16 | 8:30pm | $19.50
David Byrne and Jerry Harrison have not been recording as the Talking Heads for decades, but the mark the group left on the punk, new wave, avante garde, music scene is forever.
Psycho Killers are a group of die-hard Talking Heads fans that were Born Under Punches in Baltimore, MD. Once in a Lifetime (not during wartime), they will take you to the river with Nothing But Flowers, and you’ll think, This Must Be The Place. They’ll set the Houses in Motion (and then burn them down) with a Listening Wind that will make you Crosseyed and Painless. But as they say, a video is worth a million words!
Sons of Cream
Wednesday, Mar 20 | 8pm | $30
Ginger Baker’s son Kofi, along with Jack Bruce’s son Malcolm, team up with guitarist Godfrey Townsend…to pay humble tribute to one of the world’s greatest power trio: Cream.
Cream was undeniably the first rock “supergroup” of the 1960s. Although they were together for less than 3 years, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton left a gigantic impression on the world of rock music forever.
The energy of classic Cream shines through when Sons of Cream takes the stage. The band is making their own mark and they’re ready to bathe in the “sunshine of your love.”
Rockapella
Thursday, Mar 21 | 8pm | $46.50
If you haven’t heard of them or seen them live before, they are an a cappella group formed in the 80′s in New York City, and have played here several times in the past. Their name is a portmanteau (ooh, big word) of “rock” and “a cappella.” They sing original vocal music and a cappella covers of pop and rock songs; over time, their sound has evolved from high-energy pop and world music toward a more R&B-style sound.
The hook that keeps the crowds coming back year after year and constantly draws new fans is Rockapella’s astonishing full-band sound. A sound that seems to be impossible coming from just five guys with microphones. No instruments, no tracks, no mirrors – and their hands never leave their wrists. “We’re making every bit as much music as the whole ‘Glee’ chorus – but with only five guys,” says Rockapella’s human beat-box Jeff Thacher.
Creed Bratton
An American actor and musician, a former member of The Grass Roots with hits like “Let’s Live for Today” and “Midnight Confessions”.
Nowadays, he is best known for playing a fictional version of himself on the American adaptation of the hit television show “The Office” on NBC.
This is a quote that came directly from his bio, which cracked me up: “Creed Bratton is an enigma to himself….even though he’ll deny it. HE expects to be sued by all of ‘The Office’ cast members after this tour.”
Oh, and don’t forget some of these other outstanding shows on tap at the Rams Head On Stage! Standing in the Shadows of Motown, Live! featuring Leela James, Peabo Bryson and James Jamerson, Jr. will be here this Monday, the 11th!
