Chesapeake Bay Blues Fest — A Big Fat Zero

BayBluesChesapeake Bay Events, Inc. is pleased to announce that the 2013 Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival will join an increasing number of large music events in the nation to become ZERO-WASTE.  This means that in addition to recycling paper, plastic and aluminum, we will now turn all food scraps into compost.  We have partnered with Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works Waste Management Services for recycling and Veteran Compost to compost all of our “table scraps”.

For the past several years we have been recycling all paper, aluminum and plastic.  We have also participated in the Shell Recycling Alliance and the Oyster Recovery Partnership. Thanks to festival attendees and our vendors, we have been very successful in our recycling efforts. “We have decided to move forward with the next phase of resource responsibility for the event,” states Event Coordinator Sarah Petska.  “Although it will increase expenses and require additional manpower, we feel this is one more thing that we can do to help preserve our environment and keep areas like Sandy Point State Park and the Chesapeake Bay beautiful for generations to come,” adds Petska.

At the Blues Festival, the process will begin with Zero-Waste Stations containing three separate bins: recycle, compost and everything else (foam, diapers, etc.).  These bins are emptied into three different dumpsters, which are transported to three different locations.  For the attendee, it will mean scraping your food and paper napkins into the compost bin, recycling all other paper, plastic and aluminum, and throwing anything remaining into trash (foam, diapers, etc.).   We will continue to encourage all Vendors to use only recyclable materials.

About Veteran Compost

Veteran Compost is a veteran-owned business focused on turning food scraps into all natural soil through composting.  Based in Aberdeen, MD, they provide daily food scrap collection to Maryland restaurants, supermarkets, hospitals and special events.   In just 8 weeks they are able to turn discarded produce, meat and seafood into finished compost that farmers and gardeners can use to grow new crops. The key to fast and efficient composting is aeration.  Veteran Compost has designed a composting system which allows them to handle tons of material each day without odor or run-off issues.   They are the only business in Maryland permitted to compost food scraps outdoors.  They strive to recruit, hire and train unemployed veterans and military family members.

Petska says “We hope to be a model for all large events held in not only in Maryland, but worldwide”.

About the festival:

The Chesapeake Bay Events (CBE) held its first festival in 1998.  It has quickly gained national notoriety as one of the premier Blues Festivals in the world.  Outside of providing top caliber entertainment, the festival also gives ALL net proceeds to charity.

This year in addition to our legendary headliner, Bonnie Raitt, the following artists will appear at the 2013 Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival:

  • Performing Saturday: Bad Influence, Jesse Dee. Nikki Hill, Samantha Fish, Lucky Peterson featuring Tamara Peterson, Trombone & Orleans Avenue and Eric Burdon and the Animals to close out the day,
  • Performing Sunday: Deanna Bogart, Quinn Sullivan, Southern Hospitality with Damon Fowler, Victor Wainwright and JP Soars, The Slide Brothers, Indigenous and Mavis Staples.  Closing the festival will be Bonnie Raitt.
