There is world-class music in our backyard!  The Rams Head On Stage brings live music and entertainment to Annapolis nearly 365 days a year. From local favorites such as Sweet Leda…to regional powerhouses like the Dublin 5 (formerly The Rovers)…to A-list talent like Suzanne Vega or Johnny Winter.  Each week, we will highlight some upcoming shows–to learn more, just click on the artist’s name.  Rams Head On Stage has something for everyone. Why not take in a show? You might be surprised; but you won’t be disappointed!

Suzanne Vega

suzanne vegaWednesday, Feb 27 | 8pm | $50

Suzanne Vega was on of the first major figures in the bumper crop of female singer / songwriters who rose to prominence during the late ’80s and ’90s. Her folky, hushed, restrained vocal style and highly literate lyrics (inspired chiefly by Leonard Cohen, as well as Lou Reed and Bob Dylan) laid the initial musical groundwork for what later became the trademark sound of Lilith Fair. Her most well known songs are “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner” but she’s got SO many good ones! I’ve seen her live several times and she really puts on a nice show. Highly recommended to fans of the singer-songwriter genre.

With seven studio albums, a Grammy Award, and three additional nominations to her credit, Suzanne’s latest studio recording was released in 2007, Beauty & Crime is a love letter to her hometown of New York City and was hailed as “original, gritty and gorgeous as ever” by Newsweek and “lovely and literate” by People Magazine. However she has released four compilations called the Close-Up series over the past several years.

The “Close-Up” Series is an album series consisting of re-recordings of songs from Vega’s back catalogue with stripped-down arrangements that highlight her lyrics and melodies. They seem to have done well and should be available for purchase at her show on Wednesday.

  • 2010 Close-Up Vol. 1, Love Songs
  • 2010 Close-Up Vol. 2, People & Places
  • 2011 Close-Up Vol. 3, States of Being
  • 2012 Close-Up Vol. 4, Songs of Family

Johnny Winter Band with JP Soars

johnnywinterband_color from agent1TFFriday & Saturday, March 1 & 2 | 8pm | $45

Johnny Winter. What more can we say? He visits us annually and does well. His fans just love him! Something I didn’t know, he and his brother, Edgar (Edgar Winter Group) were both born with albinism.

Great story that he tells about on his website:

In 1962 Johnny and his brother went to see B.B. King at a Beaumont club called the Raven. The only whites in the crowd, they no doubt stood out. But Johnny already had his chops down and wanted to play with the revered B.B.”I was about 17,” Johnny remembers, “and B.B. didn’t want to let me on stage at first. He asked me for a union card, and I had one. Also, I kept sending people over to ask him to let me play. Finally, he decided that there enough people who wanted to hear me that, no matter if I was good or not, it would be worth it to let me on stage. He gave me his guitar and let me play. I got a standing ovation, and he took his guitar back!”

JP Soars TicketflyJP Soars (Johnny Winter’s opening act):

I have the feeling JP will blow us away.

JP Soars is not a typical blues guitarist. He has a diverse musical background that encompasses a multitude of influences. “I love T-Bone Walker, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, Muddy Waters, Johnny Guitar Watson, Guitar Slim and Louis Jordan. But I also love Tito Puente, Miles Davis, Hank Williams, Black Sabbath and Slayer.” Soars toured the globe and recorded several records with some of the most extreme metal bands in the world before finding his home in the blues! It is these attributes that are giving Soars an instantaneously recognizable style.

“When I first heard JP Soars I knew right away that he was separate from the rest of the pack” Jimmy Thackery

Celtic Crossroads

celtic_CrossroadsSunday, March 3 | 3:30pm is ALL AGES & 7pm (21+)| $39.50

One of the exciting things about this show is that I’ve been marketing this one all week to Celtic Dance schools because the first show at 3:30pm is an All Ages Matinee. It’s not only going to be traditional Celtic Music, but Celtic Dance as well. Perfect for families! It’s a very energetic show and they always do well for us.

Celtic Crossroads © is critically acclaimed as ‘the most exhilarating and authentic show to come from Ireland in decades – not to be missed’. It is an explosion of youthful energy and dazzling musicianship. Celtic Crossroads abounds with fusions of traditional Irish music, bluegrass, gypsy and jazz whilst pulsating with the rhythms of exciting Irish dance percussion. Spontaneous mid show ovations are the norm, and enraptured Celtic Crossroads audiences are always compelled to shout, and SHOUT for more.
