Anne Arundel County Literacy Council

Literacy tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers.   • ·          9:30 AM– 3:00 PMSat., Mar. 2 & 23, and 10:00 – 11:30 AM, Sat., Apr. 20, 2013, Tutor Training: The next tutor training series has been scheduled for March 2 and 23, with a follow-up session on April 20 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park.  Registrants must attend all three sessions. Class size is limited to 35, and the fall tutor training class filled quickly.  If interested, individuals should either email: [email protected] or call(410) 269-4419 to sign up.

 

Arundel House of Hope

Arundel House of Hope’s programs encompass a variety of services for individuals experiencing homelessness in Anne Arundel County. These include transitional housing through the Fouse Center, Supportive Housing through the Safe Haven Program, the Resource and Day Center, and the Winter Relief rotating shelter program. General volunteer needs include administrative support, transportation to and from appointments, job counseling and life skills coaches, computer maintenance help, and persons to serve on the board of directors. Additional opportunities vary by location but include facilities maintenance and repair and grounds maintenance. Donations of food and clothing items, cleaning, office and kitchen supplies, paper products, toiletry items, landscaping tools, and more are also needed. •     2–6 pm, Sun., Feb. 10, 2013 Sixth Annual Bid for Hope Mardis Gras Extravaganza:  Sponsors, attendees, and volunteers are being sought for this year’s gala fundraising event being held at La Fontaine Bleue in Glen Burnie. The event features live and silent auctions, a great meal, and entertainment. Proceeds go to support House of Hope programs. Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church

The church is doing outreach to recruit mentors to serve children with incarcerated parents. It is sponsoring Mentoring 101 Training from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the church: 657 Broadneck Road, Annapolis, MD 21409.  The training is being presented by Natalie Meade of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake. This interactive training program provides participants with an introduction to mentoring and what to expect as a mentor. Topics like Building Trust, Exploring Growth Possibilities and Sustaining the Relationship will make it easier to navigate the beginning stages of the relationship with your mentee. This is appropriate to both new mentors as an introduction and current mentors that would like a refresher. Hospice of the Chesapeake

Hospice of the Chesapeake will hold a Volunteer Information Night for prospective volunteers from 7- 9 p.m. on Feb. 20, 2013 in the Annapolis office located at 445 Defense Highway. Hospice of the Chesapeake President and CEO Michael McHale, staff and volunteers, will share information about The Hospice and the numerous volunteer opportunities available and also answer any questions. METAvivor Research & Support, Inc.

This nonprofit organization, run largely by patients with metastatic/Stage IV breast cancer, supports others and builds awareness about this disease, and raises money to fund research grants specifically for metastatic breast cancer. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available to support the organization and its mission. Assistance is needed with fundraising, website design and maintenance, and advertising in the media. Multiple Sclerosis Society, Maryland Chapter

Volunteers are needed for coordinating and implementing activities for clients with MS in long term care facilities and at their homes such as: friendly visitors, monthly social meetings, crafts, trips and preparation and distribution of holiday baskets. Current area needs are Baltimore, LaPlata and Solomons, MD.  Support Group Leaders are also needed who can start new groups for men, professional women, gay/lesbians, ethnic parents, etc. with MS in all Maryland counties. Meetings are held monthly. Also, volunteers are needed to help with fundraising events throughout the year (MS Walks, Rides) and to provide office support. Training is provided. Rebuilding Together Anne Arundel County

This volunteer, non-profit organization repairs and revitalizes homes and neighborhoods of low income families in Anne Arundel County, to include elderly, disabled, and veterans, so they may live in warmth, safety and independence. Skilled Volunteers are needed, to include plumbers, electricians, roofers, tillers, dry wall, carpet, floor installers, painters, and general workers. Also needed are volunteers to assist with fund raising, serving on the activities committees for the Board of Directors. Teams are being recruited now to sponsor home modification projects throughout the year. In-Kind Donations of building materials and/or skilled labor and Sponsorships for House Renovation Projects are most urgently needed. Severn River Lions Foundation

The Foundation provides vision and hearing screenings for almost all ages in ongoing programs. Our members, who are all volunteers, provide these screenings and also help other organizations such as Partners in Care, Meals on Wheels and Rebuilding Together (e.g. manpower for building handicap ramps) and individuals with our Medical Equipment Loan Closet. This non-profit, membership organization includes individuals and civic and community associations dedicated to restoring, protecting, and preserving the South River Watershed.
