American Red Cross Blood Drives

Volunteers are needed to greet donors, provide customer service, and serve refreshments. The American Red Cross Donor Center is located in Glen Burnie; blood drives are situated throughout Anne Arundel County. Must be 14 years of age or older. Must complete an application and attend an orientation session. Volunteers over 18 years of age will require a background check. Anne Arundel County Fire Marshall

The Fire Marshall Division is responsible for ensuring that buildings are built to code and maintained in a fire safe manner; it is also responsible for investigating cause of fires, and enforcing fire and explosives laws and for conducting internal investigations. Volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis weekdays during working hours to serve as receptionists and general office clerks. Anne Arundel County Police

  • ·        Reserve Officer Program: Volunteers are needed for its Reserve Officer program. This is a uniformed position to assist sworn officers in traffic control, administrative duties, community relations, etc.  Volunteers must be over 21, undergo a criminal background check, hours of availability are flexible. Reserve Officers work assignments all hours of the day and weekends. A minimum of 16 service hours per month is required and volunteers can be placed at any of the four district stations.
  • ·        Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS): The VIPS Program is designed to involve civilian volunteers in non-enforcement roles within the AA County Police Department. Members of the VIPS Program share their time and talents performing such tasks as clerical assistance, computer programming, crime analysis, data processing, graphic arts, photography and other tasks as the need arises. VIPS personnel do not wear uniforms nor are they compensated monetarily. Applicants must be age 18 or older, have a Maryland Driver’s License with a good driving record, and be capable of performing a minimum of 16 hours of volunteer service per month. For either program, call the Coordinator at410-222-0042 or get an application from the County Police website at www.aacounty.org/police.

 

Historic London Town and Gardens

This Edgewater historic site seeks persons interested in history and/or horticulture to become docents, historic interpreters and gardeners at this 17th-18th century tobacco port. Volunteers give site tours, house tours or demonstrate colonial crafts and daily life. They may work in historic or ornamental gardens.   • ·9:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m., Mon., Jan. 21, 2013, Martin Luther King Day of Service: A large number of volunteers are being sought for activities including general maintenance, clearing trails, clean up flower beds, splitting fire wood and mulching. H.O.P.E (For All)

H.O.P.E., Inc. is an all-volunteer non-profit Christian ministry serving families in need in the north AA County, Baltimore City areas and also the Appalachian region by collecting and distributing donated school supplies, household goods and furniture, and clothing. There is an urgent need for volunteers to assist at the warehouse from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. If you have a group that would like to come we can set up hours that fit your schedule anytime of the week. Call 410-766-0372. Leadership Anne Arundel

Leadership Anne Arundel is currently accepting applications for its Neighborhood Leadership Academy, a free program beginning January 19, 2013, for current and emerging grassroots leaders residing in Anne Arundel County. The academy provides residents with essential skill-based leadership training and important governmental and corporate connections to transform their communities. Maryland State Police 17th Annual Polar Bear Plunge-Sat., Jan. 26, 2013

This annual fundraiser at Sandy Point, Annapolis, supports Maryland Special Olympics athletes. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 7:00 am–5:00 pm for: Set-up & Breakdown, Registration/customer service; Food & beverage distribution; Plunger crowd control; and for a wide variety of other positions. There are opportunities for everyone. You, your family members, friends and co-workers, (minimum age is 16 years old for individuals– chaperoned volunteer groups 12 years old and older) are needed to volunteer for this very rewarding and exciting event. All registered volunteers will receive an event item and lunch. Volunteers are also needed for the “Super Sunday Sweep” from 11am–4Pm, Jan. 27, 2013 at Sandy Point State Park to help return the Park to its natural condition by removing items left behind by Plungers. The Super Sunday Sweep is a great individual or group activity! Ordnance Road Correctional Center  

Volunteers, 21 years old + who pass a background check, are needed as adult literacy tutors on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9-11AM.   Some evening hours are available.  Sewing class for the female population meets on Mondays from 7-8PM. Volunteers don’t necessarily need to know how to sew to participate.    In addition, CPR instructors are needed to teach classes every other month.  Volunteers will become certified through our training program which is affiliated with the American Health and Safety Institute and classes are held during the day and evening.  If interested, please call: Cindy Meyers 410-222-6350×3159.  To view our website go to www.aacounty.org –click on Detention Facilities under Departments.

 

TEAM DNR

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking interested adults from all counties to become TEAM (Teaching Environmental Awareness in Maryland) volunteers.  Our volunteers’ mission is to educate students about the Chesapeake Bay, some coastal and Bay marine creatures, and Maryland streams.  Volunteers should have an out-going personality and a strong desire to help students understand and care for their natural environment.  No prior teaching experience is necessary.  Volunteers should also have their own transportation.   • ·10 am–3 pm, Thurs. Feb. 7 and Tues.19 &26, 2013, Free Volunteer Training Workshops: The Feb. 19 & 26 workshops are being held at the DNR Tawes Bldg., 580 Taylor Ave., Annapolis, MD 21401. An additional workshop on Feb. 7 covers the Streams Program and is being held at the Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Education Center, 5110 Meadowside Lane, Rockville, MD 20855. Transportation from Annapolis is available for the latter workshop. Volunteers are encouraged to attend all three workshops.
