Military Aims To Curb Service Member Suicides. Suicide claimed the lives of more American service members than the war in Afghanistan last year, according to the Pentagon. The number of military men and women who took their own lives increased sharply from 2011 to 2012, prompting the military to launch a counteroffensive.

Maryland Zoo Mourns Death Of Polar Bear. A polar bear at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore has died after suffering from kidney failure, the zoo announced Tuesday. The bear, Alaska, had been in good health until recently and she was euthanized Tuesday morning. She was diagnosed with early kidney disease in 2008. “Words cannot describe how our entire staff is feeling, in particular, the keepers who worked with her every day for years. In the 10 years she lived at the zoo with Magnet, we think she enjoyed a good life here,” the zoo’s president and CEO, Don Hutchinson, said in a statement.

Spirit Airlines Offers Flights From BWI To Myrtle Beach. Spirit Airlines is continuing to expand in the Baltimore area. The airline announced Tuesday that starting April 25, it will be offering daily nonstop seasonal flights from Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport to Myrtle Beach International Airport. “Spirit carries more visitors to Myrtle Beach than any other airline, operating exclusively with large Airbus A319 and A320 jets with 145-178 seats each,” said Mark Kopczak, Spirit’s senior director of network planning. “We’re looking forward to giving even more customers the opportunity to save money on travel. Our ultra-low fares and optional add-ons provide customers a total price that’s tough to beat.”
