Delegate Dwyer Admits Alcohol Dependency

| January 08, 2013, 08:38 AM | 0 Comments

dwyerWith cries for him to resign echoing around the County, Delegate Don Dwyer has been clear that he has no plans to go anywhere and if the people of his district choose to not re-elect him, then the people will have spoken. Dwyer is in the process of a divorce and was involved in a serious boat crash earlier this summer and admitted that he had been drinking while operating the vessel. He was recently charged in the accident along with the other operator.

This morning, as the legislature is about to enter into session, Dwyer took to Facebook and came forward with an admission that he had become dependent on alcohol over the past year and had entered a rehab program to deal with it.

Dear supporters and friends,

I would like to take a moment to update you. In the past year I have faced both personal and professional challenges that were extremely difficult for me. As a result, and regrettably so, I turned to alcohol to cope. As many of you know, this culminated in a serious boat accident in August when the boat I was operating was struck by another vessel. Though I am unable to discuss the accident itself due to the pending court case, I thought it important that I share with you the steps I have personally taken to address my problem with alcohol.

First, it’s important for you to know that prior to last year; I enjoyed beer or wine socially.

Second, I would like to tell you that in order to prevent a prolonged problem with drinking as a coping mechanism; I voluntarily entered and completed an alcohol intervention program. Additionally, I am committed to attending extensive aftercare counseling, as well as AA meetings.

It is extremely difficult to lay bare a deeply personal issue in such a public way. However, I believe it is the right thing to do, as I feel answerable to the folks who chose me to represent them in the Legislature. I know you have been shocked and disappointed as a result of how I conducted myself. I don’t know if I am to be forgiven, but I certainly hope to regain your confidence.

This Session I am committed to renewing my focus to defending personal liberty, property rights and second amendment rights. Please feel free to contact my office by phone at 410-841-3047 or by email at [email protected] should you like to speak with me personally. I would be willing to discuss my recovery or any legislative issues.
