Boiler Explosion At Bates Middle School

Bates Middle ExplosionUPDATE:  From Bob Mosier, spokesperson from the Anne Arundel County Public Schools, “Students will be dismissed at 11:30am from Bates Middle School. Parents wishing to pick up their children prior to 11:30am, should go to MD Hall.” Bus riders will be transported as usual, however they will be arriving home early as dismissal is now at 11:30am.  Mosier was unable to say if school would be in operation tomorrow.

Shortly after the Westboro Baptist Church left Church Circle, a boiler exploded in the basement of the Bates Middle School in Annapolis. Two adult victims, both employees of the school district, were transported to a regional burn center. Initially a helicopter was dispatched for transport, but the victims opted to be transported by ground.

The school was evacuated in an orderly fashion, according to emergency plans in place. All student were relocated into the nearby Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts where teachers and staff stood guard outside the former school to insure school security.  The school has been closed today and parents can pick up their children (or buses will transport home) at Maryland Hall.  We have asked for more information from the school district but do not have it yet.

The school district released the following on their Facebook page, and classified the explosion as a “malfunction:”

Bates MS boiler malfunction caused safe evacuation of students/staff to Maryland Hall. Building assessment is ongoing. Updates to follow.
