All are welcome to participate in a seminar addressing Dr. Marin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, “Where do we go from here?” Former Maryland Deputy Attorney General and current member of the Maryland State Board of Education, Donna Hill Staton, is slated to give the keynote address. The seminar will follow a panel discussion featuring students and educators from area schools.

The January 13 Lift Every Voice concert will feature gospel spirituals performed by some of the region’s finest young vocalists, including the All Children’s Chorus of Annapolis and the Singing Sensations Youth Choir from Baltimore.

In 2002, the Maryland State Arts Council awarded her top honors in the Solo Theatrical Performance category for her portrayal of Clara Barton. Internationally renowned Italian violinist Markus Placci will join the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra for two performances featuring Francis Poulenc’s Les Biches (The Does), Suite, Pablo de Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs), Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane, and Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka. Since his solo debut at age 13 with the Bologna Symphony, Mr. Placci has appeared in solo performances with major symphony orchestras and was recently appointed to the Violin Faculty at The Boston Conservatory.

Guest pianist Cornelia Herrmann is slated to perform in the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra’s season finale. Described by Andràs Schiff as “unusually musical and sensitive – qualities that are rather rare in our musical times,” Ms. Herrmann is a frequent soloist and chamber musician who performs around the world. Drawing on a decades-old rivalry, the annual charitable event features the longest tug-of-war over a body of water in the world, pitting downtown Annapolitans against the rebels of the mock-breakaway Maritime Republic of Eastport. Dubbed the Slaughter across the Water, it features a 1700-foot rope, 450 tuggers and 1000 spectators. A festival-like atmosphere overtakes downtown Eastport and Annapolis beginning at 11:00 a.m. Tugging begins promptly (more or less) at the crack o’ noon.
