Around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, Anne Arundel County Firefighters were dispatched to a reported dwelling fire in the 1300 block of Tenbrook Road in the Gambrills area of Anne Arundel County. The first unit to arrive on the scene reported visible smoke and fire coming from one of the residences located within a two story, duplex type dwelling.  At this time, fire suppression and search/rescue operations were initiated, by the first arriving crews after gaining entry into the dwelling.  Within minutes, firefighters were able to locate a female occupant on the first floor of the dwelling, who was found to be unconscious and unresponsive.  The occupant was quickly removed from the dwelling and assessed by Fire Department Paramedic’s at the scene who determined the victim suffered fatal injuries as a result of the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was reported by a neighbor who was alerted to the incident when they heard calls for help coming from a second occupant of the home who was forced to escape out of a second floor window due to heavy smoke conditions in the home.  The occupant, a 15 year old male, was able to escape without injury prior to the arrival of Fire Department personnel.   In all, 25 firefighters worked about 30 minutes to bring the one (1) alarm incident under control.  The fire which originated on the first floor of the dwelling caused an estimated $150,000 in damages.  The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.  At this time the name of the victim and the immediate cause of death are being withheld pending positive identification and the results of an autopsy being conducted by the State Medical Examiner. If the cause of death is determined to be fire related, this will be the 6thfire death in the County for 2012.  A preliminary investigation into the incident did reveal that there were operable smoke detectors in the dwelling.
