The generosity of the community was overwhelming this year as businesses and individuals made Thanksgiving very special for many in need in the Annapolis community.

Light House: A Homeless Prevention Support Center, located on Hudson Street in Annapolis, received over 290 baskets with complete Thanksgiving meals and gift cards for local grocery stores. Baskets and gift cards were given out the Monday before Thanksgiving.  There was a tremendous feeling of gratitude throughout the shelter as recipients were given their basket.

The Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) donated over 90 baskets this year. The efforts were coordinated by DeShirle Rowel, Patient Liaison Nurse and Pediatric Surgical Tours Coordinator at AAMC. “We have been doing this for years but this is the first year we had such large participation. Each department in the hospital put together at least one or two baskets. They are very creative – some included a tablecloth and cloth napkins, whole others we decorated with turkeys made out of medical supplies.”

According to Michele Marshall, Associate Director of Development – Volunteer Service, Light House, “The generosity of those donating food and gift cards for 292 baskets was amazing. In addition to AAMC, we received baskets from many local businesses, churches and individuals. We filled the community room and baskets overflowed into the hallway.  We are indebted to the volunteers who helped make the distribution of baskets flow so smoothly.”

The kindness continued on Thanksgiving Day as Executive Chef Charles McNew, Doubletree Hotel Annapolis, invited the Light House residents to the hotel’s traditional Thanksgiving buffet with all the trimmings.  Residents enjoyed a memorable meal in the grand ballroom of the hotel including carving stations of turkey, ham and prime rib along with many of Chef McNew’s specialities – crab soup, shrimp and scallop alfredo, grilled salmon and Annapolitan Pork stuffed with apples and raisins. The meal was topped off with unlimited selections of seasonal pies and other desserts.

As the staff prepares for the Christmas holiday, anyone wishing to donate to the shelter should contact Michele Marshall 443. 569.4208.
