On November 26, 2012 at approximately 1714 hours, officers responded to a single vehicle collision with a pedestrian on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard near Edgewood Road, Linthicum, Maryland. The investigation indicated a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Richard Charles Snyder Sr. of Edgewater, was traveling north on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard in the furthest right lane when the vehicle struck a pedestrian, Nelson Bert Lehnert of Linthicum. Lehnert apparently stepped off the curb and into the path of the vehicle. There are no pedestrian control devices or crosswalks in the area of the collision, and Mr. Synder was unable to avoid the collision with Lehnert.
Anne Arundel County paramedics transported Mr. Lehnert to The University of Maryland Hospital-Shock Trauma Center with what were initially believed to be survivable injuries. Once at the hospital, however, Mr. Lehnert’s condition deteriorated and investigators from the Traffic Safety Section responded to the scene of the collision and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
On November 26, 2012, 2100 hours, Nelson Bert Lehnert succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Neither alcohol nor speed appear to be factors in this collision. Pedestrian error appears to be the primary factor, but the investigation is ongoing by the Traffic Safety Section.
