City of Annapolis, Fall Greenscape 2012, Oct. 27, 2012

The City’s Fall GreenScape project for 2012 falls on Sat., Oct.27, 2012, “Make a Difference Day”, a national program encouraging groups and individuals to volunteer in their community. Volunteers can order up to 200 bulbs, which include 100 orange tulips and 100 white daffodils with white and orange centers, for each project.  The bulbs are free and available on a first-come, first-serve basis by reserving via e-mail to Marisa Wittlinger at[email protected]provide your name, contact phone number and organization (if applicable), and indicate what public landscape area you will be planting and the number of bulbs you’re requesting.  Bulbs must be planted in public spaces within the City of Annapolis. Planting recommendations for massed plantings are eight to 10 tulip bulbs or five daffodil bulbs per each square foot of garden. Bulb pick-up will be held Oct. 22 –Oct. 26, 9 am– 4 pm at the “Pip” Moyer Community Recreation Center at273 Hilltop Lane in Annapolis.

 

Anne Arundel Department of Social Services

The Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services’ Holiday Sharing program matches donors to seniors and/or families in need during Thanksgiving & Christmas. Donors shop for food, clothing, and toys for the holiday and personally deliver to the household. Volunteers are needed at the Annapolis location for data entry and to answer and make phone calls October through December 2012. Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. ·         7–9 P.M. Fri., Oct. 19, and  8 A.M.–5 P.M., Sat. & Sun., Oct. 20 & 21, 2012,  CERT Training: The introductory session from 7-9 P.M. on Fri., Oct. 19, and two-day course on Sat. & Sun., Oct. 20 &21 are being held at the AA County Fire Training Academy, 415 Frye Rd., Millersville, MD 21108. Registration is required and all sessions must be attended. Also needed at 2:00 PM on Sun., Oct. 21 are volunteer “victims” for the disaster exercise that is part of the training. ·         8 A.M.–5 P.M., Sat., Nov. 3, 2012, Animals in Disaster: This training covers animal welfare issues that must be addressed when a storm or other disaster strikes. The training is being held at AA County Animal Control Training Room, 411 Maxwell Frye Rd., Millersville, MD 21108. Arundel Lodge, Inc.

Arundel Lodge is in need of a volunteer to staff the front desk and answer the door on an as needed basis during the day and on Wednesday evenings from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Contact Laura Murphy at [email protected]or 443-433-5931 to volunteer or for more information. Arundel Lodge is a community mental health center serving mentally ill adults.

 

Baltimore Community ToolBank

The Baltimore Community ToolBank stewards an inventory of hand, power, and gardening tools for lending at nominal charges to charitable organizations to increase the impact of their mission-related efforts in the community. A part-time volunteer warehouse assistant is needed between 9:00 am–3:00 pm on Mon., Thurs., and Fri. to manage lending and return of tools to member agencies, maintenance of the facility, and other projects as assigned. The volunteer must be detail oriented, have basic computer skills, the ability to lift 40 lbs., and be able to communicate clearly with clients and volunteers. For more information, contact. Cool Kids Campaign, Baltimore Running Festival, Thurs.–Sat., Oct. 11-13, 2012

Volunteers are needed to help with the Baltimore Running Festival, Thurs., Oct. 11–Sat., Oct. 13, 2012, at the M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. A large number of volunteers are needed for different shifts for a variety of tasks associated with the Expo on the Thurs. and Fri. prior to the race and on race day (Oct. 13) to check gear for runners, coordinate flow of runners, assist with runner and race staging, distribute space blankets to runners, assist in recovery area (food/drink distribution), at medal presentation and at water stops. Hospice of the Chesapeake

Hospice of the Chesapeake is seeking volunteers for the Tuck-In Team.  Volunteers call all home hospice patients/caregivers on Thursdays to make sure they have enough medications and supplies to last through the weekend.  Morning and afternoon shifts are available and training is provided.  For more information or to volunteer, please contact Kathy Bourgard, Director of Volunteers, at kbourgard@hospicechesapeake.org. or 443-837-1549

 

Light House Shelter

This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning & maintenance, office and administration, and adult education programs. ·         Oct. 13-31, 2012, Pumpkin Patch, 10 am–6 pm, Open Daily: Stop by at St. Martin’s LutheranChurch on Spa Rd. in Annapolis to buy pumpkins to help the homeless citizens of Anne Arundel Countyat the Light House Homeless Shelter. Bring the kids for special fall fun with seasonal crafts and activities, baked goods and thousands of wonderful pumpkins! Please bring canned goods to stock the pantry at the Light House. Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic

Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic seeks wish-granting volunteers! Work in teams of two to meet with wish families, help children discover their most heartfelt wish, and enhance the wish experience.  This is a long term volunteer opportunity.  Must be 21 years of age; application process, cleared background check and training class are required. ·         Oct. 4–Nov. 17, 2012, Baldwin Homes, Gambrills “Green” Home Tours: Annapolis homebuilder Baldwin Homes is showcasing an environmentally friendly designer home in Gambrills, MD. Money raised from tours of the home will be donated equally to Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic and Hospice of the Chesapeake Region.  Volunteers are needed to conduct tours and direct parking starting in two shifts from 9:30 am–5:30 pm on Thurs.–Sat. each week from Oct. 4-Nov. 17, 2012.
