Anne Arundel County Community Action Partnership

The Community Action Agency empowers, educates, coordinates, and assists, qualified people, including families, youth, children, the disabled and seniors in reducing poverty and building a better life for themselves. The agency’s Energy Assistance Program needs a large number of volunteers to help put together over 7,000 applications for a bulk mailing. The volunteers will be needed from 10am-3pm, on Sat., October 27, 2012 at the Bates Boys & Girls Club in Annapolis. Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues

This group of twenty-one citizen volunteers promotes positive change for county citizens with disabilities. Members include citizens with disabilities, family members of individuals with disabilities, citizens with an interest in assisting individuals with disabilities, a member of the Anne Arundel County Council and representatives of agencies providing services to individuals with disabilities. The commissioners assess needs; investigate opportunities for improvements in quality of life; support community participation; and advise the CountyExecutive on disability issues. Meetings take place on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 1 –3 pm. Applications are now being accepted from volunteers who are interested in becoming a voting member of the Commission.  Anyone who wishes to be considered for the Commission should submit a letter to the County Executive and resume addressed to Jill Bezek, ADA Coordinator, 2666 Riva Road, Fourth Floor, Annapolis, MD 21401 by Nov. 7, 2012. Anne Arundel Office of Emergency Management

The Office of Emergency Management and the AA Citizen Corps Council invite the public to participate in a nationwide “Formidable Footprint” emergency disaster exercise from 9 am–Noon, on Sat., October 27, 2012 at the County’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC), at the Henry Hein Bldg., 7480 B and A Blvd., Glen Burnie, MD 21061. Attendees will participate in a simulated flood exercise and will have the opportunity to learn about the EOC and participate in this national exercise which helps train residents about how to cope with disasters. Empty Bowls at South River High School, November 14, 2012

The school is sponsoring an “all you can eat” soup and bread buffet fundraiser from 6:00–8:00 pm on Wed., Nov. 14, 2012 at South River High School in Edgewater. Several kinds of soup are being donated by South County Café, Chevy’s, Chick-fil-a, and The Chop House, and bread is being donated by Panera Bread. Soup is served in Artisan Ceramic Bowls made by the Potter’s Guild of Annapolis and South River HS students, which are taken home by those attending. Beverages are provided and there is entertainment for the whole family such as pottery demonstrations, face painting, music, and more. All proceeds benefit the Maryland Food Bank. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake, Dundalk, Halethorpe, and Pasadena ReStores

At the ReStores, volunteers are needed for sales, stocking and receiving merchandise, picking up donated merchandise, planning pick-up routes, phone work, etc. Extra volunteers are needed on Sale Day, Sat., Oct. 20, 2012 to assist our staff by helping customers, grilling hot dogs, serving drinks/food, etc. Restore now has three locations: 1. 8101 Ft. Smallwood Road, Pasadena (Store Hours: Mon.–Sat.: 9 am-5 pm-call 410-437-7755);   2.505 Kane St., Baltimore (Store Hours–Mon-Sat: 9am-5pm-call 410-633-0505); and 3. 3741 Commerce Dr., #311,Halethorpe (Store hours: –Mon-Sat: 9am-5pm-call 443-297-5141). Harvest for the HungryOct. 15 – Nov. 2, 2012

The Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County in cooperation with the Arundel County Public Schools Central Office Campaign is collecting nonperishable food and plastic/paper items (no glass, please) at its Heritage Office Complex location at Suite 130, 2666 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD., 7:30 am – 5:00 pm Mon. – Fri.   The collected items are donated to the Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank. Cash donations are also being accepted. Old Mill High School Mock Interviews

Opportunities are available for volunteer business and community leaders to contribute to the success of AnneArundel County high school students by serving as mock job interviewers. Mock job interviews are scheduled forOctober 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, and November 1, 2012 at Old Mill High School in Millersville, MD. Such interviews are held each year at the high school to provide students with real world experience of interviewing. Interviewers are asked to provide feedback to students after the actual interview so that students can improve their skills. Pet Rescue of Maryland

This non-profit, all volunteer organization serving the greater Baltimore area is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies and finding permanent homes for the animals. Volunteers, age 18 and up, are needed to care for animals at the Timonium Petco Adoption Center, for outreach in the community, fundraising, for emergency services such as animal transport and animal care. TREE-MENDOUS Maryland

Individual and group volunteers can help plant and care for trees in their community. Help to restore and protect the natural environment where you live, work, and play. Volunteer tree projects are fun and rewarding! The few hours spent improving your community forests can make your neighborhoods better places to live for generations to come. Your neighborhood, school, business or corporation, club or organization, can plant native trees on public land in your community. Winter Relief Program, late October through early April–Rotating Locations

Forty-eight churches will provide sheltering sites and an additional 14 churches are partnering with them in the county to support a shelter program from late October until April. For one week at a time, participating churches host men (and some can also accommodate women) in need of a hot meal and shelter for the night and breakfast the next morning. The Winter Relief Program needs volunteers to assist at the Intake Center at 514 N. Crain Hwy.in Glen Burnie and to be transportation escorts for showers for our guests. Interested volunteers can contact Karen Biagiotti at 410-863-4888 or [email protected].
