Student Arrested For Bringing Weapon To Southern High School

UPDATE:  Here is a copy of the letter sent home from the school. The school does not mention that a knife was also found on the student in question.

On October 16, 2012, at approximately 10:54 a.m., the School Resource Officer assigned to Southern High School located in the 4400 block of Solomons Island Road in Harwood responded to the school cafeteria at the end of lunch for a report of a student possibly in possession of a weapon.

The school received a call about a student carrying a possible weapon and displaying it to another student during the day. Consequently, The SRO and school administration immediately responded and located a 17-year-old male student in possession of a knife and a CO-2 powered pellet gun. The pellet gun, which was not loaded and had no cartridge inserted, was subsequently confiscated from the student. No threats were made during the incident. The male student was arrested and charged on a juvenile citation with two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon on school property. The investigation is ongoing.

As a reminder, the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s School Resource Unit’s new smart phone application entitled “AACOPD Speak Out” is now available in an Internet-based format at the following address: http://aacopdspeakout.myapp.name.

The “app” allows users; specifically young people accustomed to using Smartphone “apps”, to quickly and anonymously e-mail School Resource Unit officers and supervisors with any questions, concerns or notifications about at-risk behavior.
