Disability Commission Seeks Members

The Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues is seeking new members.

“This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in a group that promotes positive change for citizens with disabilities in Anne Arundel County,” said Commission chairman Ginger Palmer.

Much of the Commission’s work centers on accessibility, transportation, housing, legislation, and children’s issues. Additionally, each year, the Commission holds Disability Awareness Day highlighting vital services, programs and achievements in a festival-like atmosphere. This year’s event will be held Oct. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Westfield Annapolis mall.

The Commission on Disability Issues is comprised of 21 voting members and 17 ex-officio members.

“As a strong advocate for disability issues, the Commission on Disability Issues plays a vital role in helping develop policy and legislation,” County Executive John R. Leopold said. “I look forward to filling the remaining vacancies on the Commission knowing that these appointments will have the opportunity to work under the leadership of current chairman Ginger Palmer in recommending change.”

Applicants can be an individual with a disability, have a family member with a disability, serve within the disability community, or have an interest in disability issue. All applicants must live in Anne Arundel County.

Commission meetings are open to the public and are held the fourth Tuesday of each month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Chesapeake Room, 2664 Riva Road, Annapolis, within the Heritage Office Complex.

Anyone who wishes to be considered for the Commission should submit a letter to the County Executive and resume addressed to Jill Bezek, ADA Coordinator, 2666 Riva Road, Fourth Floor, Annapolis, MD 21401 by Nov. 7, 2012. For information, contact Ms. Bezek at 410-222-4464. TTY users should call via Maryland Relay 7-1-1.
