Several special events are coming up this fall in Maryland to honor the state’s history and those who served for freedom. In conjunction with the Office of Tourism’s Spotlight on “Land of the Free” this September, which will highlight the state’s deep ties to independence, these events – and others throughout the state, including the Eastern Shore — are the perfect opportunity to check out Maryland’s important role in history as one of the key leaders in American freedom.

Defender’s Day (September 7, 8 & 9) – A three-day event with over 100 War of 1812 re-enactors, parades, military bands, fireworks, a symbolic ship-to-shore bombardment and more. The weekend will commemorate the writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” beginning with a Friday evening salute from Federal Hill with muskets and cannon. Activities include children’s programs, historic boats, military encampments/demonstrations and a visit by Pride of Baltimore II.

Maryland, My Maryland (Sept. 8 & 9) – Don’t miss ” Maryland, My Maryland”, a reenactment of the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam, commemorating the 150th Anniversary. The event will be held on  the Boonsboro Town Farm and feature more than 3,000 re-enactors.

Battle Anniversary Weekend at Antietam (Sept. 15, 16 & 17) – A full 3-day schedule to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Antietam. Programs include special battlefield hikes, commemorative events, 150th Campaign Speakers Series, mobile exhibits, youth activities, Civil War music, and living history artillery and infantry firing demonstrations throughout the weekend.
