Anne Arundel County Animal Welfare Council
County Executive John R. Leopold is seeking new members for the Animal Welfare Council, a citizen panel that has been very successful in leading significant change to benefit pets and pet owners. The advisory group is committed to the goal of promoting the sensitive and humane treatment of domestic animals and wildlife in AnneArundel County. To accomplish its mission, the Council is involved in preparing educational tools in support of the humane treatment of animals, promoting special events designed to create awareness of its goals, and reviewing county laws and regulations pertaining to the care and treatment of animals. The Animal Welfare Council meets at the Request of the Chair as required to meet its goals and objectives. Members must be motivated and able to remain professional and respectful at all times, including during the discussion of polarized topics. The Council is particularly interested in adding members with legal, educational and marketing experience. Asbury Church Assistance Network (ACAN)
ACAN is a non-profit organization providing food/toiletries, and/or financial assistance toward court-ordered eviction notices or utility cut-off notices in Anne Arundel County. Volunteer Claims Analysts and Intake Personnel are needed who are high school graduates with at least 2 years of customer service experience. Volunteer Inventory Personnel with at least 2 years of high school education are also needed. Candidates must be computer literate and have excellent communication and customer service skills. Banneker-Douglas Museum
The Museum is announcing a four-session training program to develop your knowledge of African American history. Learn presentation and public speaking skills while discovering the people, places, and events that shapedMaryland’s past, present, and future. Training prepares volunteer docents to share Maryland’s African American history with visitors to the Banneker-Douglass Museum. Training will be held on different subjects on four consecutive Saturdays from 10 am–Noon as follows: 9/22, 9/29, 10/6, and 10/13/2012. Registration is required by Sept. 15, 2012. Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, Sat., Sept. 29, 2012
Volunteer opportunities are available now and on the event date for the 25th Annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival. The 25th annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, coordinated by Kunta Kinte Celebrations, Inc., raises an awareness of the African-American heritage and the common challenges encountered by all ethnic groups striving to preserve their culture. The festival will be held at the Annapolis City Dock, Sat., Sept. 29, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas: set up, refreshments, clean up, and more. Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank (EVBB)
The EVBB is one of only two volunteer blood donor centers for dogs in the United States. In return for your healthy dog’s generous donation of blood, s/he will receive an automatic health check every time blood is donated. Your dog could save a life, and that life could even be his/her own some day. Dogs know they will get treats and really look forward to going to donate blood. For each unit of blood donated, a free unit of blood is available for your dog should s/he ever need it. In addition to the main location at 844 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park, EVBB maintains facilities at Crofton Veterinary Clinic, in Crofton, the Highway Veterinary Hospital in Bowie, Animal Clinic of North Bowie, and Muddy Creek Animal Hospital in West River; in addition numerous other donor sites are now available throughout Maryland. Happy Helpers for the Homeless: Saturdays and Sundays
This nonprofit organization provides food, toiletries, and clothing to the hungry and homeless. Volunteers, as young as 6, are needed Saturdays (11:30am-2:30pm) and Sundays (1:00-4:00pm) to assist in distributing items and bag lunches in downtown Baltimore and Glen Burnie. Ongoing donations needed: men’s socks, toiletry items, men’s clothing, blankets, shoes in very good condition, sturdy napkins/paper towels, mustard, juice boxes, fold-over sandwich bags, lunch meat and fresh fruit. Volunteers can meet in Glen Burnie to caravan up to Baltimore. There is also a critical need for cash donations to help pay rent for space used by Happy Helpers. · Bag a Breakfast Project. Put together a bag breakfast for a homeless individual. Include box of cereal, with spoon and cup, Pop Tart, fruit, hot chocolate package with cup and spoon, juice box, and napkin. Can be done anytime. Just drop off at Happy Helpers. · 9 am–2 pm, Mon., Sept. 11, 2011, 10 Annual “Worldwide Freedom Harvest”: Held in honor of the victims and heroes of 9/11/01, Donations of food are needed at the Anne Arundel Co. Food and Resource Bank. Items most needed include: cereal, peanut butter, canned meats, canned fruit, and soup.
· 10:00 am–12:30 pm, Sat., Nov. 17, 2011 “National Family Volunteer Day”: 1,000 sandwiches will be prepared at Grace Point Presbyterian Church, 615 Donaldson Ave., Severn, MD 21144, while simultaneously

Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, Sat., Sept. 15, 2012
A large number of volunteers are needed from 9:00 am– 1:00 pm, Sat., Sept. 15, 2012 to help with cleanup atAnne Arundel County’s Downs Park and Fort Smallwood Park. Students can earn community service credits by participating in the world’s largest volunteer event of its kind. OHLA (Organization of Hispanics/Latin Americans of Anne Arundel County)
OHLA provides support, education and relief services to immigrant Hispanic-American families. Volunteers serve as Outreach Coordinators bridging existing gaps in areas such as health, jobs and other services needed by the community. There is an immediate need for bi-lingual volunteers to staff the Annapolis office on Mon. & Wed. mornings at the Community Resource Ctr. at 80 West St., and assist Hispanic constituents with many issues such as immigration & interpreting; training is provided. Partners In Care
Partners In Care is a community nonprofit providing supportive services to help older adults remain independent in their own homes. We operate using an innovative time-exchange program to build community. People use their time and talents to help each other accomplish the myriad tasks of everyday living. Anyone who helps out will get help back from the community when they need it. Services are non-medical and neighborly. Primary services include the Ride Partners program in which volunteer drivers take people to their medical appointments; and theRepairs Program, in which volunteer handymen make small repairs to help people maintain their homes. In addition, volunteer opportunities are available to work in the Upscale, Resale Boutique, to help in the office, to run events, and more.
